Random Wilderness Lodge Question

Our DS (1yr old) is used to sleeping with a vaporizer primarily for the white noise. We really don't want to pack it, ship it or otherwise take it with us next week (I already feel like I'm packing the whole house!). We seem to remember that the fans in the bathrooms are pretty loud if the door is open and thought it might be a good alternative. Does anyone happen to remember or noticed if the WL bathrooms have fans that are connected to a light switch or are on any sort of timer that would turn it off? We really don't mind the light, as he sleeps with a nightlight also, but I would hate for it to turn off in the middle of the night.

(And please don't flame me for my parenting for allowing my son to become used to sleeping with white noise. Our house has VERY thin walls.)

I don't have an answer for you but why would you get flamed for letting your child fall asleep to white noise. Heck, people sell machines just for that. I have one myself.

WL's bathroom fans are motion-sensitive, so unfortunately they wouldn't help you with creating background noise to help DS sleep soundly. They turn on when you walk into the bathroom, and will automatically shut off if there is no movement in the room after a short amount of time.

Have you thought about bringing a small, inexpensive table fan that would create some white noise? That way, you wouldn't have to bring the humidifier and if space in your suitcase is a problem on the return trip, you could just leave it.

If the Wilderness is updated to include the iHome (or just has a cd player) you could always get a cd of white noise or rain storms, etc. I can't sleep without noise as well and the Thunderstorm cds are great.

My 16 month old must have white noise to sleep. We have a Zune (Microsoft version of an Ipod) and we play white noise on that at night. Last trip we packed our speakers thinking we might need them, but the clock in our room had a jack and could play the "music". It worked out really well. The noise provided something familiar in a strange room and it masked any noise I made while I was still up.

BTW, you might think about switching to a CD, and Ipod, or a noise machine even at home. I would worry that constant vaporizor use may lead to mold.

Shop around online and you will find several small (alarm clock sized) electronic white noise machines with different and multiple sounds (surf, wind, rain, etc.) to choose from. Some of these are combined into alarm clocks and are easily packable for travel. They are great for travel, when you don't know how noisy a hotel might be.
Beside the moisture issue, they also use less electricity than a vaporizer or fan (no motor).

We love our white noise. We have stayed both WL and Poly and brought our white noise machine. Last week we were at the Poly and I forgot to pack our white noise machine and the fans didn't cut it. They were motion sensitive and also just randomly seemed to turn off and it was awful. We all really missed that white noise!
Our machine is small. We just toss it in our suitcase. Its round, I got it at Bed Bath and Beyond for like 20 bucks. I have two different kinds, both are really small. My son sleeps with one that is strictly white noise, high or low, and ours is white noise plus other noise too (heartbeat , waterfall, etc..) that we never use. We all just like the white noise. Just do a search online. They are so easy to purchase and small enough to travel with. I will never forget to pack it again! Also, both can run on either batteries or cord.

Let me clarify a bit - I did a quick search on Amazon and there are SO MANY to choose from! (That's why I asked for recommendations.)

We use the Hammacher Schlemmer Sleep Sound Generator. The baby has one, my wife and I use one, and we always travel with one now.

It's a gentle whooshing noise of a fan. Not tiny, like the size of a big grapefruit, but worth every penny and very effective.

I have a Conair brand, with a built in clock/radio alarm. It has 12 different pre-programmed sounds, including white noise. I bought it at a department store, but you can find them online, about $30-$35, I think. We've never had any problems with it, about 5 years old, and it's small enough to easily pack in an overnight bag. You can buy more expensive machines, some with interchangeable sound cards, mp3 ports, etc. Some of them are electro-mechanical (they have moving parts) but the Conair is digital-electronic.

My sis-in-law swears by her con-air....we are "travel fan" folks ourselves. Here's best wishes for good days and restful nights.

my son and myself both sleep with plug in fans for the noise factor. You can get a very small plug in fan that is about 5-6 inches in diameter at target for about $9. But honestly, the ventilation system at hotels makes enough white noise for me that I sleep better in hotels then at home. Go figure.

If the rooms have a clock radio, and I think they do, you can set the radio to static and adjust the volume to any level. My sister used to do this to create white noise.

on our dec. 2007 trip i packed my little table/desk fan that i had purchased at target for like $9. worked perfect and i will be taking it on our april 2009 trip.
