View Full Version : Mishaps or Strange Occurrences on the Rides

I was curious if anybody had any stories of mishaps or strange occurrences on the rides? During our last trip My son and me were in the 3rd or 4th seat on Aerosmith. As we came out of the last loop I felt a draft on my right side. Then I noticed the door on the side was open and it was flapping back and forth as we were speeding through the rest of the ride. When the Limo pulled in a Cast Member asked me if the door just opened. I explained what happened and they pulled that Limo off to be checked. I didn't realize there was a door on the side. The next time we went on and I looked at the Limo, apparently there is a door in the 3rd or 4th seat only. I would assume it is there to make it easier for someone with a physical disability to get into .

Plenty!The two most memorable:

Carousel of Progress got stuck on a scene and we had to sit through three replays of the same finale scene before we were able to leave. (the door wouldn't line up, and I guess they didn't us to "emergency exit.")

On my last trip, late in the day, Space Mountain cars had a minor collision, extremely unusual apparently, that resulted in ride evacuation and shut down, plus EMTs coming in to tend a hurt ankle. We were in line, not on yet. They gave us special passes to come back and ride any time the next day. And surprisingly, we did. I thought it might have scared my kids off SM, but no. We got to see the lights on as we made our way out.

We were on spaceship earth last Feb of 06 and we stopped around where the guy is chisling away at the statue, well we stayed on there for 30 min and then they decided to get us off, well when we stepped out of the cars, we were told not to get near the props because the floor were weak there??? Kind of made me scared. But the stairs are located in the middle of the sphere and they are brightly lit and there is a bunch of them! Kind of neat in a way!

We rode Splash Mountain first thing in the morning once and they were having trouble with the computers on the ride. The kids were pretty little and we were on the ride an extra 30 min. at least. After about 10 min. DS said he needed to go potty and shortly after that DD said the same thing. The running water made it worse. We kept stopping before the big drop while they rebooted the computers. It was awful. We could see the drop and kept inching towards it, but took forever getting there. It is bad enough anticipating it, but to have to look at it for so long, you start to think that maybe you don't really want to go down it after all. I didn't care for the song too much on that trip.

Last year was our first trip to WDW and we had all decided that Haunted Mansion was the first ride we wanted to ride. My DD is not an adventurous soul but she was really looking forward to this ride!
All was going well on the ride until we got into the graveyard scene and it stopped. My DH and niece were in the doombuggy in front of us and it was turned slightly so we could barely see each other. After about 20 minutes of just sitting there and not knowing what was going on, DD (7) started getting a little panicky. It was dark and the music was playing over and over and we were right by the head that pops up....over and over and over....I have to admit it started grating on my nerves after awhile. Her panic rose and rose and rose and then she had to go potty! After about 15 more minutes of panic stricken leg crossing, the lights came on and a CM came along and asked us to walk off the ride.
It was pretty interesting seeing it all with the lights on and trekking through. We made a beeline for the bathroom.
I thought for sure that DD was ruined on rides for the rest of the trip, but she rode other rides that night adn then bravely tried HM again the next day and we rode it about 5 more times during the trip!!

December 17, 2006 (I still have my trip planning Excel file, so I can be sure of the date)...

We were on POTC, when we heard the "Remain seated, Pirates of the Caribbean is experiencing technical difficulties..." announcement. We were stuck just in front of the bridge in the burning village scene. After a few minutes of that, we noticed that the lights were coming up and the various voice/sound tracks were cutting off. I guess they hit the kill switch or something.

Anyway, after 40 minutes, a cast member magically appeared from one of those door I'd never noticed and told us that they were evacuating the ride. I felt so bad for the cast members that had to put their waders and boots on and get in the water and push us to the nearest emergency exit!

A lot of people were kinda annoyed, but I thought it was awesome! Backstage is always cool to me. lol

We did get those Fastpasses that are good for any ride in MK; we used to them to avoid a 2 hour wait for Splash Mountain on our next day in MK. POTC was closed for several days (does anyone know why? We never found out.)

It was open (thank goodness!) when we went back (but it didn't open until that evening). I think it was the 21st (we hadn't planned on going that day). We waited in the line and got to the ramps that lead down to the boats and we heard our favorite announcement again. We never did get to ride the whole thing. I was okay with it, but the friend I was with had never seen the new additions. I was bummed for her. But we got 2 more FPs. lol

We were stuck on splash mountain. After the big drop, but before the last room. We sat there for 20 minutes. Thank goodness we weren't soaked, or it would have been uncomfortable!

As we ended the ride and were about 3 logs from the exit queu, the ride stopped. No one (cm's)wanted us to move, but we were against the cement sidewalk and eveyrone wanted out. After about 10 minutes, I had just had it. I had to use the restroom, so I got up with my family and left. Then, all of the other logs around us got up and left. Must have been about 5 or 6 logs worth of people. The CM's were mad. I just really had to use the restroom!

We sat through almost an entire showing of Mickey's PhilharMagic without sound. It was quite interesting to say the least ;)

Back in October I was on Test Track. It had been having sound issues all week while we were there. I decided to hit up the ride while my wife waited. Wouldn't you know it, it e-stopped during the uphill slalom portion.

We sat there for 40 minutes in complete silence and darkness. Then the lights started popping on and a CM started to evac us all. We got to walk just about the entire ride backwards to a stairwell that dropped us off at the exit.

It ws interesting as they were very poignant about not stepping on the actual track. We had to step over it to get out.

Seems to be alot of stories about Splash. I have one to add. A few years back the log stopped about half way thru the ride. We stuck inside by the fish that jump in and out of the water. After about 25 mins of hearing the song and the fish splashing water into the boat a CM came by and told everyone need to exit the boats. They took us out a back door in the backlot of of Splash. It was pretty cool view. Luckly the Spash was up and running a few hours later. :smickey:

I don't know if this counts or not, but I found it unusual...

We went to WDW 3 years ago and to the MK on my birthday. It was myself, wife, and then 15 month old daughter. It was my birthday and I wanted to ride Splash Mt. but obviously a 15 mo cannot ride that so I went on myself. I was in the boat and we were just getting ready to go up the first hill before you enter the indoor part of the attraction when a woman in my boat stands up, yells something at her husband like "you didn't tell me I'd get wet" or "I'm not getting wet"... something very much to the affect that she didn't want to go down that last hill... grabs her daughter, and steps off the boat onto the walkway! Well, didn't you see that before you got on the ride?

So the ride immediately stops and a voice comes on telling her not to move. She sat down and stayed there with her daughter until a CM came and took them through a back door. I glared at her the entire time. How dare she ruin my birthday ride!

Her husband and other child stayed on the ride. I would have too if my wife (who I love!) were to do something like that. How ridiculous!

well for us it happened on the Haunted Mansion at the scene where the crystal ball head is, we got stuck there for 30 min as well and although it was nice and air conditioned, after about 3 minutes that scene got pretty annoying, so now everytime we go on this ride and get to that scen we kind of get a chuckle out of it

We get stuck on Pirates ALL the time, but the most memorable breakdown was on my very first trip to WDW.

I rode Star Tours with the lights on. Evidently, the CM forgot to flip the switch and everybody sat there looking at each other during the ride. We got off and told them the ride had malfunctioned, and they let us get back in line right away for proper ride in the dark.

Last December we were at MVMCP and wanted to ride Dumbo (one of our favorites). Since the line wasn't long, we got right on a cute Dumbo (complete with Santa Hat). When the CM went to start the ride, the button wouldn't work. Right at that moment, they started the fireworks over the Castle, and we had an unobstructed, front-row seat!!! It was incredible!!! We sat there watching the fireworks for about 5 minutes before they got the ride going. When we finally lifted off, it was as if we were amongst the fireworks. In fact, once in awhile, a burning cinder would fall close to us on the ride. We will definitely never top that Dumbo experience!!!:dumbo:

We rode Star Tours in complete darkness once during Star Wars Weekends. The video never came on so it was just motion in the dark. Even the Storm Trooper who rode with us seemed confused. We got to ride it again afterwards when we told the castmember what happened. :trooper:

In Jan 07 we got stopped on Splash for about 1/2 hr (reading this thread, this seems to be a common occurence) anyway, we were about 6 logs from getting off, could see the loading/unloading area but couldn't go anywhere - now I know how those people on Jet Blue felt.:D

Mishaps: I think this will qualify - my DS was telling me this story last night at dinner.

His High School teacher went to WDW last week during our Spring break. Teach was at BB waiting his turn for Summit Plummet (working up his nerve) the rider in front of him went down and uncrossed their legs part of the way down - Ugly, nasty compound leg fracture. He didn't have to chicken out since they obviously had to close the ride, but he said it was one of the scarier things he has seen. YIKES!

I have 2
1. 2001 MNSSHP Haunted Mansion stopped in the ballroom scene for 30 min. and it was pitch dark only the sound. At first we thought it was part of the fun being Halloween but soon figured out it was a malfunction.....Also on HM in 1987 my brother and I where getting off the ride and his shoe lace got stuck in the belt and shut the whole ride down for a few min.

2. Carousel of Progress got stuck and we watched the same scene over and over...

Last September we got stuck for about 20 minutes at the very end of POTC - right where Captain Jack is sitting in the treasure room drinking rum and singing. It was OK at first, but after 20 minutes of "A Pirate's Life For Me", we were all ready to get out of there! We just barely made it to our ADR at Liberty Tree Tavern!

I never actually got escorted out of a ride but I have been stuck on POTC before they redid it, and we were in the part where the cannon noise comes from the big boat. We were probally there for about 20 minutes but everytime the cannon went off it made me jump a little bit so it kind of got annoying after awhile!

We were also stuck on the HM once, in the graveyard scene where those things pop out behind the gravestones.

This isnt me getting stuck at Disney but I have gotten stuck for a couple mins on rides like Spaceship Earth, Pirates, Haunted M. I got stuck at MarineLand in Niagara Falls in Canada once on a ride like Dumbo but its much higher up in the air. I was in it with my bf, and Im deathly afraid of heights. Anyway I started to have a panic attack tears streaming down my cheeks and faint(I suffer from extreme vertigo) Needless to say I always get nervous going on rides of a great height.

i'm sure this has happened to someone before, but at the end of El Rio de Tiempo, our boats got a little backed up and started to slam into eachother like a rush out chain reaction. We were more than a little jolted, but it was more funny than bad. Maybe the CM had to many :marg: . :D

Wow that Summet Plummet story is scary. It took me a whole lot of DH calling me chicken before I would go down. I am also afraid of heights, so even getting up there was a feat!

We got stuck on the chair lift for 10 min or so... also scary.

I have had to walk off Spaceship Earth and IASW, back in the '90s.

We got stuck on TestTrack for a few minutes the last trip.

Also, we got seriously stuck on the Great Movie Ride. We were in the first part w/ the singing in the rain for probably 15 min, and the CM had to ad-lib a WHOLE lot. Music/AA kept stopping, then starting, then stopping. When we finally got going, two CMs had to manually push open each set of doors (including the one who is supposed to "surprise" you in the IJ scene). It took us close to 45 minutes to get through the ride!

About 10 years ago, we got stuck near the end of the dinosaur scene of Ellen's Energy Adventure. After waiting patiently for 20 minutes, a Cast Member came and manually drove the vehicle back to the theater. We did not watch the final segment and were evacuated.

The attraction remained closed until the next afternoon.

On our last trip, in December of '06, we got stuck in Buzz Lightyear for about twenty minutes. Now I'm a huge Buzz fan, but just sitting in one place, with all that neon and the sounds of lasers and such...well, it gets old, fast. Zurg was beghind us and kept yelling "Guards! Seize them!" My sister and I started joking after awhile--"Wait, what does he want the guards to do? I missed it." "I'm not sure! I wish he would say it again!" The sound flickered a few times, and little gates came up around the track. We eventually started moving again, but our scores were wiped clean. We went again two days later and again got stuck, but only for about five minutes.

On the same trip Test Track kept stalling, resulting in our waiting for twenty-five minutes just to be let into the little room that leads you to the ride. It stopped a few more times when we got back into line after the room finally opened, but worked perfectly while we were actually on it.

It was my parents' first time in Disney with us and we were on the Dinosaur ride when it broke down. Now I've been told that, even when the park is closed, the audio-animatronics in that ride remain in constant motion because it's better for the hydraulics. Whether that's the case or not, I don't know. But the ride was stopped for several minutes and you could still hear the Dinosaurs moving in the dark. It was a little eerie and surreal.

After 15 minutes, my mother blurts out, "Should I call 9-1-1?" She was truly starting to panic. We started to laugh and told her we were sure the CMs KNEW we were in there. "Maybe they don't!" That was the joke the rest of the trip.

But it was still eerie, in the dark, near those huge beasts, when you can hear them moving and the ride has stopped.

My Mom still gives me grief from when we went in 1988. To this day she contends that I broke all of the rides we went on. We were never escorted off, but in a 3 day span, we got stuck on or had technical difficulties with Imaginations, HM, BTMR, POTC, Rio Del Tiempo, Space Mountian, The Land, and the ride into Seabase Alpha (the name of which I have suddenly completely blanked out on). Every time I would get on a ride with my family, it would have a problem. By the end of the trip, they almost wouldn't let me ride with them (which really didn't bother me too much, being a rebellious teenager at the time anyway). It never happened to them when I was off being a teenager, and the only thing that happened to me solo was a little bit of sound distortion on the ride which I cannot rememeber the name of in Tommorrowland that had a rocket ship taking off (at least I think that happened, I can't find any record of this ride, and can't remember much more about it, maybe that was an earlier trip, or just one I took in my head).

Being stuck - Nemo 20 minutes in front of Bruce. It was sort of neat though since it was during the passholder preview and it was the first time riding. Buzz lightyear but I took advantage and got my score built up.

Ride malfunctions - worse for me was one of the water slides at BB. It was a tube slide where you are on a raft. Somehow the raft slid out from underneath me at the begining so I went down the entire tube on my back and those tubes are not smooth. They have ridges. I was sore the entire trip.

I got stuck on POTC in DL, we were escorted out and got to see all of the backstage stuff, pretty neat  .
It wasn't a ride break down, but while on Finding nemo we got held up 10-15 minutes in the bubble room
Also happened on Buzzlightyear in the space sequence

In December we went on the Universe of Energy. The ride broke down just at the second to last scene. You know, right before they tell you the big final answer to the Jepardy Question. Anyway we sat there for about 20 minutes or so. One of the CMs came on the speaker system and was talking to us about other things in the park to see, trying to keep everyone calm. Finally he said "if you like to play with 12 year old boys, you can go next door"... He suddenly stopped as everyone broke out into heavy laughter. The manager came on and said that this sounds like a good time to get everyone off the ride. It was so funny. They had to bring in step ladders since the cars were so high off the ground. :D

I've had minor stops on various rides at Disney but all the talk of getting stuck in the dark, made me remember....

our last trip was the first time I stayed on property [I used to live in Kissimmee so no need for staying at a hotel!]. We took our friends and their two kids for their first time as well. In the middle of the night during our stay I sat straight up in bed from my sleep--being confused and not realizing where I was, I instantly thought I was on Dreamflight and the ride had shut down, power and all. I also, for some reason, thought that I was riding it with our friend's 8 year old son and began to panic when he wouldn't respond to me because my first thought was to make sure he was okay. It took me a a good 2 minutes to realize I was just in our POP hotel room, but it did give me an awful scare!

Wonder what I will do if I DO end up on a shut down ride in the dark!

My family and I were stuck on Test Track about a year ago... which would be fine, except that it was in the tunnel RIGHT BEFORE the "truck scene." It was pitch black for about 15 minutes... I thought it was a bit eerie, but my dad just sat back and took a nap-- haha.

Best part, though-- the CMs realized we were stuck, so we were allowed to stay on for another ride, back-to-back. And.... we got stuck at the SAME SPOT again!

Needless to say, we did NOT stay on for a third time around... haha.

I don't know about that, but I did see a special about WDW on TV once that said that the Hopper animatronic at It's Tough to be a Bug is put through a series of exercises at night by someone using a control panel in order to help keep him operating smoothly. So, it's very possible that the Dinosaur animatronics continue to run after the park closes. I also heard that Little Leota at the Haunted Mansion continues to operate after the park closes, but I don't remember where I heard that one.

The vehicle stopped once when I was on Test Track while it was banked to the left on the big outside loop. It was somewhat strange to be sitting there turned up on our side while we could see delivery trucks driving around backstage at Epcot.

The most unusual and bizarre mishap that I've ever experienced at WDW was many years ago on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. During the ride, a storm came into the area. I can't remember if what followed had anything to do with the storm or not. It may have just been that the ride broke down, but the sub might have been stopped intentionally in order to prepare for evacuation because of the storm. Whatever the case, we ended up sitting there in the sub, and it didn't move for quite a while. I don't remember how long it was, but thinking back on it makes it seem like it was at least 30 minutes with no sub movement. It was a little scary because we were sitting there in a sub that was partially submerged in water, and we could hear the storm outside. On top of that, we weren't near the dock. I was very young at the time. The oldest that I could have been was 12 or 13 based upon the knowledge that the ride closed about 1994. What happened next was something that I had never seen before or since at WDW. When the sub finally did start moving again, it went a short distance and stopped again. Then we were told to climb the stairs to exit the sub. When we got to the top of the sub, we saw that we were out in the middle of the lagoon, and all of the other subs were lined up next to each other in a straight line from where we were all of the way back to the dock. It then became obvious why we had to wait so long before the sub moved. They were busy lining up all of the subs. We were then told to step from the top of one sub to another until we reached the dock. This was probably a standard evacuation procedure that got used more often than I realized, but it was certainly new to me. It was a once in a lifetime experience, and it's fun story to tell, but I wouldn't want to have to do it again. Of course, it's impossible for it to happen again since 20K Leagues is no longer there.

On our last trip, we got the "Bre'r Fox and Bre'r Bear are causing some commotion downstream" message EVERY TIME we rode Splash Mountain! I understand that rides get backed up when handicapped people need to be loaded but it was getting a tad ridiculous. Once we were stopped for about 15-20 minutes, and thought we would have to be evacuated. I believe it was on our 2nd to last day that the ride was closed for over half the day for unscheduled maintenance.

I have been stuck a number of times on different rides. Some can be good. I got good pictures of the ballroom scene in HM and SE, ran up my score on Buzz.
The worst one was MS. This was before we had a choice of green or orange.
We had just lifted off when everything went blank. During our 45 min wait to get off they kept telling us to 'sit tight and they would get to us', like we could go anywhere, at least there was AC. We could hear a ladder just outside the door and we realized we were still in the air. Turns out though the floor drops out for it to spin. We had to climb down 1 ladder and climb up another to get out.
We got FP to go on again, I tried later that day but it went down just before launch this time. I didn't go again till the next year when green started.

Our last trip, we had fastpasses to Splash Mountain, and right when we got to the front of the line, they couldn't let us on becouse of lightning in the area. We had to wait as they unloaded all the logs. Since they couldn't just stop the ride, they left if running while we had to wait for over 45 minutes. We didn't have anything else to do, so we just waited there until it was over. The people next to use were talking with a CM, and we heard some real interesting stories about the ride and people she has met. Finally we we able to ride it.

I have never been escorted off of a ride before, but have been momentarily stopped numerous times.

The worst, and therefore most memorable time, was on test track when our test vehicle stopped in the environmental room, you know the one with all the heat lamps? We just sat there for about 5 minutes but those 5 minutes seemed like an hour.

It was quite miserable and at the end of the attraction we complained. The CMs were very apologetic and they gave everyone in our car a complimentary souviner photo.

The moral of the story? Complain!:thedolls: You might get something in return for your pain and suffering.:D

During our 2000 visit, there were forest fires near the parks. They were under control, but the smoke was drifting all over the MK while we were there one evening. When you walked under a black light, you could see little white flecks of ash all over your shirt.

Anyway, we were riding the TTA, and the ride stopped while we were in the tunnel where the model city is displayed. We sat, and sat, and sat; with smoke from the forest fires getting thicker and thicker. Finally, CMs had to come with flashlights and lead us out--it was pretty unpleasant. One little girl in the car ahead of ours started having an asthma attack. CMs apologized profusely, quickly took the little girl to the medical facility in the park, and gave everyone a coupon for a free drink at one of the vendors.

I'm really surprised by the Splash Montain stories- hmmm...sarcasm doesn't translate well on postings. We get stuck all the time but never mind- it's how we know the songs so well!

I'm surprised there were not more posting about Test Track. When I worked in Epcot in 02 it was ALWAYS down. ALWAYS. I don't know if this is still rule of thumb, but it would always be shut down for thunder storms in addition to all the mechanical problems. Before Mission Space was open I always used to tell people to do TT first not cause it was my favorite but because it was such a pain in the toosh to get on. I've been caught in the cue, in the fast pass cue no less, staring at the dummies wishing it was me getting lobbed in the chest just to have SOMETHING to do.

On the other side of TT, I was walking to work (that's why somebody saw delivery trucks when they got stuck, it's right by where cast members come and go from) and someone did not secure their hat properly. It came flying off on the curve and right near us and landed on the ground. Of course since it was a Red Sox hat I picked it up after I was on stage went over to a TT CM outside. I was told later that day that the hat did get back to the owner and that he commented- "See! It's my lucky hat!" Man, I miss being a part of the magic. Don't miss getting $6/hour though!

94 we rode SM while light up- SO COOL to see the insides!

My son and I were on BTMR yesterday and it locked up at the top of an outdoor hill for about 30 seconds. Uneventful, but it was a first for me on that attraction...

On our most recent trip a couple weeks ago, we got stuck on Test Track. Our car stopped shortly after we entered the outdoor track and then continued to move VERY slowly around the loop until we got to the spot where you're banked to the most severe angle and we stopped. We were stuck there for about 10 minutes, just kinda hanging to the side. We were right over the outdoor line so we were waving to everyone entering the ride. It's nice to know that the seatbelts work because we would have gone tumbling out of our car!! And then instead of starting up gradually again, the car took off at the 60 mph it should be going at that point.

We rode the safari in AK w/o audio. After the ride CM said we could stay on for another ride. I didn't mind at all. Been stuck in the land on the boat ride for about 30min listening to the say clip over and over. Same thing on Carousel of Prog. That's enough to drive you nuts.
