I have a package for April and will be returning in November. I am thinking about changing my tickets to an AP. Can I do that at check in or should I call ahead?

You can do it at any guest relation location. I will be upgrading mine to an AP at Epcot when we arrive

Upgrade after entering a park on your visit. You can do it anytime before the last day of the ticket and get full value of the ticket against the price of the AP. Your AP will start, however, on the day you first used your ticket.

It is generally a better thing to do it IMMEDIATELY after entering your first park. Then you can take advantage of any Passholder Discounts, Gifts (like the magnet[s] at Flower & Garden,) merchandise, etc.

IF you are going to upgrade AND you have already pre-paid for the MemoryMaker package, that cost may also be deducted from the AP price. I am not sure on that point though. MemoryMaker is included with most levels of AP.

You can also do it at the Will Call windows. The line is usually much shorter. I just did this a couple weeks ago.

We did this last May and it was one of the quickest Guest Service services I've ever experienced.

i am not sure if this is well known, I have been to disney 4 times every year for the last 15 years, but i just found out that right next to the hall of presidents there's a guest relations that you can go to. I've been there a few times and there is NEVER anyone in there.

The reason I said after entering a park was that, at one time anyway, once you used the ticket once, the current price for the ticket would be used for discounting the AP. Example would be if you bought your ticket/package prior to a price increase, you would only get your actual purchase price if unused, but once used one time, you would get the current (higher) value of the ticket as discount against the AP price.

Never made sense to me, and may not be true, but that was what I told years ago.

This was true once, yes, but it's no longer true. It was an unintended consequence of the ticketing system. Disney now tracks all tickets via the ticket number and they know when the ticket was purchased, who bought the ticket and how much was paid for the ticket. This includes tickets you purchase from resellers (although in that situation, the price paid is the price the reseller paid Disney, not what you paid the reseller).

With this data, it no longer matters if you use the ticket before you upgrade or not - the upgrade price will be the same. And tickets from an authorized reseller are seen as having the full value of that ticket type as of the date of purchase, so you don't lose your discount when you upgrade.

You can upgrade tickets to APs at any Guest Relations location, or at any ticket booth at any park (including water parks). Upgrading to an AP cannot be done at your resort (but most other upgrades can).

With a package, everyone has to have the same type of ticket. Once you've checked in, individual tickets can be changed at will. So if you are the only person on the reservation, you could call and have the ticket upgraded to an AP. If there are others on the reservation and you don't want to upgrade everyone to AP, then you'll have to wait until you arrive on site. Remember, APs have to be activated (at Guest Relations or at any ticket booth) before they can be used for entry.
