View Full Version : Need help with alcoholic drinks

The wedding planning has stalled on drinks that can be served at the reception. I don't really understand the ins and outs of alcohol and would like to get some impartial opinions.

My daughter was told at the initial meeting she could have two types of hard alcohols, four types of beers, champagne and wine, and four signature drinks (but no shots). They asked her to provide recipes for the four drinks that she wants, which she did. They rejected her recipes, stating that each signature drink could only have one alcohol in it. She says that is ridiculous. I'm trying to find a middle of the road.

This is one of the drinks she wanted

HPNOTIQ Sleeping Beauty

Drink Type: Martini

Ingredients
1/2 oz. Hpnotiq
1/2 oz. Bourbon Whiskey
1/2 oz. Banana Liqueur
1/2 oz. Grapefruit Juice

Instructions

Shake well with ice and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with a cherry. Winning recipe in the Cocktail Competition 2004 held by N.B.A. – Japan

Are there really signature drinks with just one type of alcohol? Are there substitutions you can make so it only has one alcohol? Any other advice you think would be helpful is welcomed.

Do the signature drinks need to be made from the 2 selections of hard alcohol she picked?

As far as I understand, yes. I don't know if signature drinks have to have hard alcohol or not, but she is only allowed to use the two she picks.

Signature drinks do not necessarily need to contain alcohol. Depending on her guest list she may want to pick 2 alcohol based, 1 wine/champagne based, and one virgin. It would be easier to give suggestions if you knew what 2 hard liquors she selecting (I'd assume vodka and whisky) and when the wedding is. Fall? There are a lot of good selections that could be made with one liquor and honestly the vendor should have a list of suggestions on hand for her to look at.

It's too bad that she just can't omit a couple types of beer in favor of more options for hard liquor. Aside from vodka and whiskey, I can totally see rum and gin being included there and would definitely widen the options for specialty drinks. Did the Disney planners have any suggestions for her?

This is exactly how I feel.

Thanks for the info. She picked Iced Tea Sangria, White Wine Vodka Sangria (which takes citrus vodka and raspberry vodka. They say that is two alcohols. She says it is just vodka.), the Sleeping Beauty drink and Blackberry Whiskey Lemonade. The wedding is Sept. 22.

She isn't having it at Disney now due to some family tragedies on the groom's side. Can I just scrap the whole thing and pay for them to elope? :fresh:

Here's some for you to look at
Maple Bourbon Old-Fashioned (https://www.delish.com/cooking/recipe-ideas/recipes/a49745/maple-bourbon-old-fashioned-recipe/)
Apple Cranberry Moscow Mule (https://heatherchristo.com/2017/10/18/apple-cranberry-moscow-mule/) for this you would need to replace ginger beer with ginger ale
Apple Cider Mimosa (https://www.delish.com/cooking/recipe-ideas/recipes/a46963/apple-cider-mimosas-recipe/)
Autumn Chiller (https://www.chowhound.com/recipes/autumn-chiller-13479) non alcoholic by substituting ginger ale for ginger beer

Two more that I drink that might work
Pomegranate Champagne Cocktail (http://cocktails.foodviva.com/long-drinks-recipes/pomegranate-champagne-cocktail-recipe/)(is champagne one of their wine choices?)
Cranberry Pomegranate Martini (http://cocktails.foodviva.com/cocktail-recipes/cranberry-pomegranate-martini-recipe/)(I omit the Cointreau altogether when I make it)

If the two liquors to work with were rum and vodka, you would be able to make a plethora of drinks.

I personally would be glad they rejected the Sleeping Beauty drink. Hypnotiq and whiskey would be one disgusting drink to most people. Hypnotiq itself is usually pretty bad. Of course you are wanting to see how many people you can make puke that drink would be a great way to go if you can get them to drink any of them.

Would this one be good? It would be her wedding colors in a glass if they put the blue hypnotiq at the bottom and then the purple on the top. I had found it before and wondered if we could use it in place of the sleeping beauty.

HPNOTIQ Purple Haze Martini
Drink Type: Martini
Ingredients

1 oz. Hpnotiq
1/2 oz. Pomegranate Juice
1/2 oz. Orange Juice

Instructions
Shake well and strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with an orange rind or apple slice.

The ladies would probably like it ok for one maybe two drinks. Hpnotiq is pretty fruity already and the taste gets overbearing fairly quickly so people are going to drink very much. They guys probably won't hardly touch it because it will be so fruity. We bought a bottle of Hpnotiq once years ago and finally after multiple parties we threw it away. Nobody liked it much and it would just sit there untouched. The main liquor in it is vodka so you are really just making a super fruity vodka drink more or less. It also has Cognac in it which gives it that sort of weird taste that most people don't particularly like.

What are her wedding colors?

The blue is Malibu blue according to David's Bridal. The other color is a darker purple. Kind've like David's Bridal's plum.

Well, that makes single liquor drinks a bit tougher.

anything with UV Blue Raspberry Vodka should work if she wants to stick with colors. I would try Lemonade and UV Blue Raspberry Vodka to see how it was. or Sierra Mist and UV Blue Raspberry Vodka.

We did Sierra Mist and Watermelon vodka with a splash of cranberry juice for my sons wedding (he is a huge watermelon fan). We ran out of these first.

The other drink was Bacardi Limon and an orange drink that I cannot think of the name right now over crushed ice. This was a huge hit with the guys since it tasted like the orange Hi-C they drank at school as kids

Those are excellent suggestions. Using the blue raspberry vodka in sprite, 7up, or sierra mist would be a pretty good all around drink that would appeal to most. The carbonation in the soda along with the little bit of sweetness is a good combination that will make the drink pop. Now I want to make one and try it out. lol

These are the drinks that the venue randomly picked for her. Any thoughts? Some of the other ones you guys said sounded a lot tastier to me.

1. Moscow Mule you will need to bring lime juice, ginger beer, and vodka WTR will provide lime slices

2. Sea Breeze WTR will provide Grapefruit Juice, Cranberry Juice, and Lime slices for this drink You will bring the vodka

3. Apple Pie Punch WTR will provide ginger ale You will bring Apple Cider Pear Nectar Apple Slices, and Vodka for this drink

4 Refreshing Pear Drink You will provide Pear Vodka Pear Juice. WTR will provide Peach or Pear Sparkling water whatever is available.

I thought they were providing 2 hard liquors and the drinks needed to be made from one of those but these recipes each have you providing the vodka/flavored vodka (along with other ingredients), I'm confused

I'll be an easy guest, nothing fancy, I'll have vodka with ice cubes please

We have to provide the alcohol, but we can only bring two hard liquors and the drinks need to be made from those. My daughter says she doesn't like those, but I think what she really doesn't like is them telling her what to do.

I just wanted to give you guys a quick update and tell you that you all are amazing.
It was decided that the Sleeping Beauty would not be used (thanks for the heads up that it wouldn't be good for most people).
The Apple Cranberry Moscow Mule will be used and the Sprite with UV Blue Raspberry Vodka.
Phew! So glad that is over with.

Glad you were able to come to an agreement on the drinks. The more I hear about wedding planning these days, the happier I am to be the parent of a boy. Everything is so complicated and expensive! Kind of like planning a trip to WDW, lol!

This is my third wedding to plan in a year's time, and the other two were rather easy. I wouldn't call my daughter a Bridezilla, but she definitely likes things her way. (I wonder where she gets that? :P)

Don't be so sure that being the parent of the groom frees you from anything. My two boys and their wives expected me to do most of the planning for their weddings. My family has planned so many weddings, we could probably do it in our sleep.

Oh Beth, I too thought I would "wear beige, open my wallet and shut my mouth" being the mom of 2 boys. THAT did not come to fruition! My son's bride was from Beijing, her parents were coming over and I had 6 weeks to plan a wedding.

That is when you thank the good Lord for sisters and good friends.

Glad the Sprite and UV Blue Raspberry Vodka worked!

Well, I figure we will be doing some planning someday, as parents of the groom. But if we end up doing more of the actual ceremony and reception, it will be a simpler event. Back when my husband and I got married, we did all the planning long distance, since he was living in New Hampshire at the time, I was in Florida and the wedding was in Minnesota. We paid for the majority of the wedding, including tux rentals and bridesmaids dresses (only two bridesmaids), cake, catering (BBQ, salads and desserts), flowers. We had beer, wine, champagne and whatever alcohol the rest of the family wanted to contribute. My family did help with some expenses and logistics, because they lived in Minnesota! Aside from my dress, I had to order everything pretty much over the phone since the internet wasn't a "thing" back then. After our first dance, we changed into casual clothes and played volleyball with our friends and family at our reception, which was held at my brother's country place. It was one of the most relaxed, happy and comfortable weddings I have ever been to, if I do say so myself. :)
