Either is acceptable. "Donut" has been used as an alternate spelling for a century and became more normalized with the appearance of Dunkin Donuts.

I always spelled it doughnut but donut seems to be commonly accepted.

This is a word that I accept either way. One does not seem more correct than the other.

Don't have doughnuts too often but when I was a kid I would get a jelly doughnut once I week when the Helms Bakery truck would come down our street.

This area of Jersey....Donut

btw, when you Google the word donut, it comes up as the opposite spelling of doughnut

I always write doughnut. But when I hear the word, in my head, I think donut. I know both are correct, I just thought it was funny that I can't bring myself to write it as donut. Unless it's Dunkin Donuts I'm writing about. Which, by the way, rule.
