From the MCO Facebook page:

"They've seen 35 years of service and have traveled the equivalent of 6 round trips to the moon. We're replacing the iconic shuttle (APM) trains to our original airsides, which may impact your upcoming visit."

"So many emotions. While you were sleeping the first set of APM shuttle cars made their final trip and were taken off their tracks. After 35 years, the process of a completely renovated APM shuttle system has begun."

Did they give any idea of what the transition plan is?

just some clarity on this. This is the first train that was removed for the gates 30-59 area. Each gate area has two trains and each train will take around 7 months to be fully replaced which includes time to refurbish current tracks. One train will service the gate area while this happens. There are still currently 7 trains still in operation so still plenty of time to get a final ride, or two.

35 years! That's a pretty good run. Last time I was there, they did look a little "long in the tooth", as it were. I'm sure the refurb will make 'em neat, clean, modern, and quite spiffy. I always considered the shuttle tram trip as my first "ride" on my WDW vacations.
