View Full Version : Could I get some Pixie dust and prayers for my 8 year old?

My son David is 8 years old. He has some struggles in life. He has Autism, ADHD, Sensory Integration Disorder, anxiety, and asthma.
For the last month he has been getting unexplained bruising on his abdomen, chest, and back. Not small ones but big 2-4 inch ones with knots. And he's been getting 3 or 4 nose bleeds a week. Sometimes a couple daily.
I took him to his pediatrician who immediately sent him to the hospital for rushed blood work.
Initial blood results are in. I'm not going to lie. I'm kind of freaking out. The doctor called and referred him immediately to a hematologist. His platelet count is "almost critical" she said, at 21,000. Normal count should be 140-400,000. Yikes!
So off we go Wednesday to Nemours in Orlando.

Naturally, this mama is worried sick. Praying a lot. And I know this sounds so "woe is me" because there are people who have much more on their plate in life.
I just feel like he already has so many challenges, and now we could be looking at a chronic blood disorder.

Any extra pixie and prayers, love and light you have would be so appreciated.
:pixie: for David.

My brother had the same thing when he was a kid, he is now 45. I am sure it freaked my Mom out as well, in fact she still talks about it to this day. He was sick a little while but after the meds started working he got better quickly. The trick was weaning him off the meds as the body didn't like to go cold turkey with the meds he was on. Once he was off the meds and a couple of blood tests over the next few months he never looked back and had no recurrence of this condition.

I am sure you are very scared. Stay positive. Sending:pixie: I was a hematology secretary for 28 years. I have seen many, many cases treated very successfully.

UPDATE:

David has a platelet condition called ITP. Results look good that his platelet count should be back to normal in 3-6 months. If not they will do some treatments to help it along which in that case it could be a year or so. He said he doesn't generally see this in children of this age. Usually it is younger.
In the mean time low key activities for him. No jumping, running, climbing trees, contact sports, anything that could cause a bleed, especially yo the head.
They are very confident at this point there is no cancer.
Thank you all so much for all thoughts, :pixie: and prayers. Now the long road to recovery.

Glad to hear you have a diagnosis. ITP is what my brother had. Not having to take any meds is a good thing, my brother needed prednisone. I am sure he will be back to his old self in no time!

UPDATE:

So we had our first set back on this journey. His platelet levels got up to about 31K
And then plummeted over the next week or so.
This past Tuesday evening he got hit in the head and we have to take him for safe precautions, to get examined. Well within a few hours, he started brusing again and lots of petechiae all over his body.
They did a cat scan and he had no brain bleeds thank God. But his platelets had dropped to critical level [10K].
So they transported him from our local hospital to Nemours.
They checked his levels again as soon as they got there and they had dropped to 8K. A 2K drop in less than 4 hours.
He was admitted and then did a RHoGam treatment. Which basically boosts the platelets up enough to get out of critical level. It's a temporary fix, but helps so they don't risk any internal bleeding which is what we want to avoid because that's when things can get bad quickly.
So we were there from Tuesday night until Thursday afternoon. His levels finally came up to 26K which gets us just out of critical level. Still low, but less threatening.
Still have a long road ahead of us until this all resolves itself.

I think the worst part is that any treatment is basically a temporary fix until the body straightens itself out and the ITP goes into remission.
Here's to months of recovery ;)
Thank you for continued thoughts, prayers, love & light...and lots of :pixie:

Sadly though because of all this, money is tight having to go back and forth to Nemours and with him having to be less active, I've had to cancel our annual labor day vacation to Disney. Just can't swing paying for the hotel and meals for 4 days. We can go over for a day trip though. Thinking Animal Kingdom where it can be more low key but lots of fun exploring. They love AK!
