Vintage Disney items to be auctioned off by Springettsbury Township auction house
Items are from the collection of the late children's book author and illustrator

Hake's Americana & Collectibles is holding an online auction that includes vintage Mickey Mouse toys and other Disney items that belonged to the late children's author and illustrator Maurice Sendak.
The online auction also includes an original watercolor Maurice Sendak painted for a 1982 television production of the Sergei Prokofiev opera "The Love for Three Oranges."
Hake's Americana & Collectibles is auctioning off 1930s-era Mickey Mouse toys and other Disney collectibles from the collection of the late children's book author and illustrator Maurice Sendak.
Sendak, best known for his 1963 classic "Where the Wild Things Are," amassed "one of the finest collections of Disney merchandise ever assembled by a collector," said Alex Winter, general manager for Hake's Americana & Collectibles in Springettsbury Township.
Sendak, who died in 2012, struck up a friendship with Ted Hake, the auction house's founder, in the late 1960s. The two shared an interest in 1930s-era Disney items and Sendak bought a number of items from Hake's over the years, Winter said.
The more than 40 Disney items being auctioning off from Sendak's collection include a book of Mickey Mouse drawings the Walt Disney Co. gave Sendak in 1988. The book has gotten a bid of $9,900 in the online auction that ends July 17.
Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters have had an enduring hold on with collectors who first became acquainted with them as children.
"It's really timeless," Winter said.
Hake's, in addition to the Disney items from Sendak's collection, is also auctioning off an original watercolor of a castle Sendak painted for a 1982 television production of "The Love for Three Oranges," the opera by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev. Ted Hake purchased the painting from Sendak in 1985. It is rare for Sendak's original art to be available for purchase because Sendak pledged to donate the art from his books to the Rosenbach Museum & Library in Philadelphia, Winter said.
"It's rare that any of these pieces hit the market," he said.
In an online auction that closes July 15, Hake's is also auctioning off a large collection of U.S, political memorabilia owned by Don and Mildred Wright. One of the highlights of the Seattle couple's collection is a campaign button from 1920 when James M. Cox and Franklin D. Roosevelt ran for president and vice president on the Democratic ticket.
The particular campaign button is rare because only a limited number were made, Winter said.
"It's one of those coveted pieces, like a Ty Cobb rookie card," he said.
