Well gang,
I am in need of the power of your positive thoughts and prayers. I just retired from the US army and the job I had lined up was canceled thanks to the budget sequester issue. Now I am scrambling to find a job.

Tomorrow there is a job fair locally here in Indianapolis. I am going of course. One of the companies that will be there is Radio Disney. They have two jobs as Account Executives open. I am not a big fan of sales to be honest, I used to be an Army Recruiter which is selling the Army and I was good at it but it wasn't fun. But this is Disney and I would love to have the chance to sell for Disney (I think).

So if you guys could send positive thoughts my way. I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Sitting and listening to the Radio Disney station and taking notes on what advertisements they air. Hopefully I can establish a good pattern on who they market to at what times so I can talk about that and impress the people at the booth. Need to seem like the best candidate they could hope for.

Will say that the music they play is ....... not wrote for someone like me. Could be worse I guess.

They market to moms. Focus on moms and things moms would buy/use/like. Moms are the ones listening to the message while they drive the kids around all day with that station on.

Well, I sat through 3 hours of program/advertising. I took notes on each ad and assigned it labels as to the source (local, national, internet, internal Disney) and apparent target (Mom, Dad, generic Parent, Kid & Parent, and Kid).

I put those details into an excel document and then created a bar graph and two pie charts. I then took some time to analyze what the data appeared to say. I put the graph/charts and analysis into a two slide powerpoint presentation which I am going to print off in color tomorrow morning. I am really hoping that they will be impressed by the effort. I am not an Ad man by trade but I can be trained and put forth a 110% effort. Lets hope that they can see that as well.

Good luck today!

You will find something. Are you working with any transition companies at all or recruiters? I know there are many, many companies around the country looking to hire veterans. Your skill set is very in demand.

Good luck! My husband just found out when his time off will start due to the sequester. Just hoping his job with the army holds out a couple of years so he can draw retirement.

So the job fair is over. The radio Disney person there was the lady who leads the part time folks not the station manager. Its the station manager who hires the position I was looking at. So the work I did last night on analyzing their adds was for nothing. My resume was placed in a stack of perhaps 50. Nothing to make myself more memorable or show them how enthusiastic I am for the job.

Sigh. Back to the drawing board.

Not giving up just yet. I took some initiative and found out the physical location of the station. Drove there and while I did not get a chance to meet with the station manager, I did get her direct email and phone info. So I am going to try and ask to set up an appointment so I can sell my self to her. If it doesn't work then it just wasn't meant to be.

So I emailed the Station Manager yesterday and I got this reply about 30 Mins ago.

Hello Jim,

Thank you for your email and your interest in Radio Disney. May kicks off our busy season at Radio Disney and I must book appointments on my calendar to allow for dedicated time to give to everyone that I meet with. If you would, please forward me a copy of your resume and I will personally reach back out to schedule a time for us to meet at my office.

I appreciate your enthusiasm and passion for our station and brand. I am looking forward to learning more about your interest in this position.

Thank you,

Andrea Farrell

Good call on the long weekend Tonya. I really had not thought about that together with this. Makes sense.

The other side of that coin is that the Indianapolis 500 is this weekend and I know that Disney XD is doing something there. I would think that the boss would check on that a few times. It could even be a combination of the two. She might not go into the office at all but only go out to the track.

We will see

Update....
I emailed the Station Manager again today. She replied with an interview date of 11 June.

Lets hear it for not giving up huh? Now of course, I don't have the job, but its a step in the right direction.

Good job landing an interview!

Honestly, sometimes companies are not as much in a hurry to hire people as you might think. I worked for a company a long time ago and we "needed" to hire a graphic designer, and the process took like 3 months. I was kind of surprised at the lack of urgency considering how much we "needed" this person.

This is a job in radio sales, correct? Having worked as a director of sales and marketing, they may be assessing your initiative and assertive style. Sales is all about the contact. If you are not maintaining contact, you cannot make a sale. Will you continue the effort even if you are not getting the response you are looking for? Always find a way to ask for the close! Never leave a contact without setting up the next step, then follow throught every time.

Well its over and it went pretty well. The Station Manager was very impressed and now I have to talk with the next level of person. She was impressed that I was so prepared for the interview and had done the research and slides showing the demographics and source of advertising and how I would use it in the position. If I make it past the second interview, I will have to do a third interview. So while I am on the right track, I don't have the job just yet.

I wish I knew how many people were interviewing and had mad it to the next level like myself.

Andrea, the Station Manager, said I should hear back by the end of the week about the next step.
