This last week has been one heck of a wild ride.

Last Monday we were told to take my father out of the hospital. They wanted him in a skilled nursing facility. Try finding one last minute with no notice from the hospital... venting and rant... UGH He really needed to be in the hospital longer

We found a snf close to home and it looked very nicel, clean, no nursing home smells:ack:

I picked up my dad and transfered him to the snf. Everything went well at first. Later on they called me at home. They were late in ordering his medications from the pharmacy. I was asked to bring in his medications from home. NOT GOOD The only thing they have going for them is that they are very nice... not too smart though.

Yesterday, my father had asked for assistance to the bathroom.... they just told him to go.... without assistance. HUH??? Arn't they there to help????? Vent -> I could have done a better job than they did, even with my bad back..UGH:mad:

Anyway... I picked him up to take him to a doctors appointment. He is back in the hospital. He is swollen from the waist down..."everything" is large. Poor guy.

After the appointment, I picked up some lunch. I brought him home and we all had lunch together. Jessica and I then took him to the ER at the hospital closer to home.... hated the one that he was in last time.

I found out from my brother later last night that the fluid he is retaining is caused from his heart. The heart is pupming fine, but the heart is not resting as it should be. That is causing the shortness of breath, getting tired very easily. and retaining fluid. He also has congestive heart failure due to all the fluid around the heart. He was already feeling better once he was transfered to his room.

My father was getting depressed at the snf, and also is sad that he can't celebrate my birthday (Thursday). I told him not to worry about it.

He can really use all the prayers and pixies to get him through this tough time. Thanks so much.

Marci, more prayers and good thoughts coming your way. Regarding the fluid retention, what do the doctors say about his kidney function?

.

It is not the best. He does have a kidney specialist following him. All his different medications can play havoc on the kidneys.

Hopefully your Dad will rally. My dad had the same problem with "everything" below the waist was bloated...congestive heart failure..he lived four more good years once we got it under control...and we watched every once of sodium he ingested, was hard at first, we kept a spreadsheet and weighed him at the same time every morning to monitor his weigh (which will show if they are retaining water), but it can be done...he previously had two by-pass operations before that...my prayers will be for you and your Dad.

He is no better since he was admitted. The doctors are trying to find that fine line with his medications to reduce the swelling and not cause problems with his kidney and liver function.

Yesterday, he had a liter of fluid drained from his chest. He didn't feel any better after that.

I think this might be the end of the road for him.:( Today he couldn't remember his own phone number and all he wants to do is sleep. He sleeps during the day and is agitated, and up at night,....driving the nurses crazy.

Please keep the prayers and pixies coming. We all could use them.
Thanks

So sorry to hear all this, Marci. :( How are his sodium and ammonia levels? That can sometimes cause changes in mental status.

I hope and pray that your dad feels better soon and that you have more time with him. :pixie:
