Dec. 6, 1971 – The first Auto-Train left Lorton, Va. On its inaugural run down south to Sanford, Fl. (located about 43 miles from Disney World). First setup in 1970, the Auto-Train Corp. realized there was a market for trains that could carry both passengers and their auto’s to sunny Florida. Soon known as the “official family railroad of Walt Disney World,” the Auto-Train would even sponsor the Magic Kingdom’s steam train (for a short time in the mid 1970s.) Unfortunately the company would later go bankrupt – but Amtrak would recognize the market demand for such a route and purchased the Auto-Train depots and much of their equipment.
Dec. 6, 1974 – Disney’s Foreign featurette “Man, Monsters and Mysteries” was released in South Africa.
Dec. 6, 1976 – The Disney TV special “Christmas in Disneyland with Art Carney” aired.
Dec. 6, 1977 – Lindsey Alley, a member of Disney’s 1989 TV series “The All New Mickey Mouse Club,” was born in Lakeland, Fl.
Dec. 6, 1984 – The very first video under the “Walt Disney Classics” brand name arrived in stores. The first of the Classics on video was “Robin Hood.”
Dec. 6, 1990 – “Espace Euro Disneyland” (Euro Disney Preview Center) welcomed its first guests.
Dec. 6, 1992 – The “Tinkerbell’s Treasure” shop opened in Fantasyland in the Magic Kingdom at WDW. (Replaced Tinker Bell Toy Shop.)
Dec. 6, 1997 – The Miami Herald ran an article titled “Disney ride’s fan not ready to kiss Mr. Toad good-bye.” The article tells the story of Jeff Moskot, a 26-year old from Miami, and his fight to keep Mr. Toad from being replaced by a Winnie-the-Pooh attraction.
Dec. 6, 2002 – The Lizzie McGuire episode “Xtreme Xmas” debuted on the Disney Channel. Aerosmith lead singer Steven Tyler appeared as Santa Claus performing “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town.”
Dec. 6, 2003 – The Disney/Pixar feature “Finding Nemo” premiered in Japan.
