Last night we went to our local theatre to see a production of "Kiss Me Kate" and it was wonderful! But, the first act was ruined by very rude and drunk people sitting behind us. One young woman got up right in the middle of an important scene and went out to get yet another glass of wine. When she returned, as she was making her way back down her row, she hit in the head each one of us in front of her with her huge purse that she had slung over her arm. Another woman in their party saw it and immediately started laughing hysterically which, of course, started their whole group laughing as well. So very rude to the audience and the actors on the stage. One couple left, we found out later, to get yet more wine and were not allowed back into the theatre. When they didn't return, the others followed, and they in turn were also not allowed back in! Yeah for the management, although I think they should have been taken out a lot sooner. We really enjoyed the rest of this wonderful production, probably even more because we had experienced what truly awful audience members can do to disrupt the enjoyment of a show. Here's to people who have been taught and know how to use their manners!

It's unfortunate to have to put up with people like this. I'm glad you got to enjoy some of the play without them. And yes, it's especially a shame for the actors to have to play over the distraction. The sad part is that they were probably completely unconcerned with their effect on other people, and all out for their own good time. They probably won't learn from their own mistakes.

Yes that is bothersome. Glad you still enjoyed the show. At least the theater enforced rules at some point. We saw a show here at our theater and they did not enforce theater etiquette at all. :( in fact contributed to it...escorted late people to their seats with flash lights in the middle of the act!!! Very distracting.

I'm so glad that the management didn't let them come back in! We went to see Wicked on Broadway two weeks ago. We were seated about 10 seated into the row with 3 more seats next to us on the "dead end" of the row in the balcony. Those seats sat empty until just before curtain went up. Then three women sat down. The one next to me was visibly drunk, kept loudly moving the ice in her glass, and when she finished took her mother and sister's glasses in turn to finish. When she was all through she started looking towards the aisle and I knew she was thinking of leaving. She slurred to me that at the end of the scene (not the act!) she was going to get up. In this small theatre that meant my husband actually had to stand up for her to pass, along with 8 other people after him. She went to another open seat on her way back, but had the nerve to do the same thing AGAIN during the second Act. I miss the days when ushers would absolutely NOT seat you once the show began. Low ticket sales means everyone has to be more lenient...

What a shame. I do think the theater management was wise in waiting until the rudies left for the lobby area. Can you imagine the mess and disruption it would have been if they sent someone whith a flashlight to get them out?

It is aggrevating when you are trying to enjoy a show or movie and people are bing disruptive. On a similar note, we have stopped going to the movies on a Friday or Saturday night when a movie just opens at the box office. By us, it's usually filled with teens and preteens who talk, scream, swear and run up and down the aisles the entire time. A few weeks ago my oldest son and I went to see a PG-13 movie that had been out already for 3 weeks. We went to the Saturday 5:30 show. Unfortunately there were several small groups of kids without adults and it was the same thing, the entire movie. Giggling, running in and out, loud talking etc. For what you spend these days for outside entertainment, it really spoils it.
