Great pictures Christine. I am feeling photo envy.:envy:

I've been seeing lots of great Disney shots lately which is making me want to get something better than my iPhone to take pictures with. What camera are you using?

The best thing about Fantasmic! is the great effects you can get in some shots, like that dragon.

It's tough to get good shots there since you have little time to adjust.:mickey::thumbsup:

Oh my, thank you all but I have to give the credit to my husband John! My job is to shoot video and also tweet / post to Facebook from the iPhone. He does the awesome shots like these :)

As for the questions about what kind of camera & settings etc- I'll pass that along his way and he will be on to answer. (his screen name is Alongfortheride)
I can say we were sitting in Pocahontas Q.

Thanks for all the kind words regarding the pictures. I hope you enjoy them, and I will try to keep them coming as we do stuff around the parks.
As far as gear, I used a Canon 7D with 70-200 f/4L. I was shooting ISO 1600 which gave me pretty decent shutter speeds. (1/160 - 1/250). Note that a lot of these pics are cropped. My lens will not get as "close" as these pics imply.

I'll be happy to help any way I can if anyone has camera questions.

Thanks John. Glad Christine has you along for the ride. I think I probably need to start with a more entry level SLR. It has been a long time since I've used anything but a phone or a point and shoot for photos.

Honestly, short of the pro gear, I'd get the best you can afford. The higher end cameras aren't much more complicated than the lower end, and they have better capabilities for you to grow into. If you really get into it, you'll be itching to upgrade from entry level in no time. Also, LENSES are usually more important than bodies. A great lens on a lower-end body will trump a poor lens on a great body any day. Now, if you can afford good/great lenses on a good/great body, you're golden.

Nice! You should be able to get some great pics with that.

A good walk-around and a decent telephoto are all you really need. For Disney, with the exception of the safari and Fantasmic, you just need the good walk-around. Disney is built for shooting wide, not long.

Thanks for the advice. I used to take pictures quite a bit before I had children but take was back with my old 35mm camera. When I moved to digital, I went more basic but would love to move up to an SLR soon and have more control.

Awesome pictures! My husband and I love to hang out in the park during EMH and just take pictures. The lighting is gorgeous at night.

Also enjoying the camera talk. I use our school's DSLR often, as I'm the yearbook adviser. But I've yet to purchase one myself, although on the hunt. My extra money always seems to go to Disney.

Most folks can get by with three lenses, a 18-55mm zoom or similar, a 70-250mm zoom or similar, and a 50mm. With these three lenses you can cover most situations. I agree, a short zoom is the best lens for WDW or in general.

I'd prefer people would just learn how to use the camera they have properly before buying a camera they may never know how to use. Buying a $2000 and up camera and shooting on full auto is a waste of good equipment.

Learning about "stops" is the key.

I currently have 2 lenses- a 18-55mm, and a 55-200mm. I don't know why, but I feel like I should have more (especially for shooting low-light situations, like rides).

That's were the 50mm comes in handy. The canon f/1.8 50mm is relativly cheap at $100.00, the faster f/1.4 goes up to $400.00.

What's the difference between the 2?

What's the difference between the 2?

The f/1.4 allows you to open the lens more to let it more light, but it's only a 2/3 stop advantage. This affects your choinc of shutter speed.:mickey:

That's why I've been hesitating on buying a new camera. Since my kids are with me on most trips, there isn't a lot of time to set up shots or do more than pull my iPhone out. I've been able to get a lot of good iPhone shots in full light but dim light is always a challenge.

Ah, I see. I'd like to have one, but I most likely will go with the f/1.8 for budget reasons
