Is there a way to know ahead of time exactly how much a buffet will cost? On the reservation site Cape May lists the cost as somewhere between $36 and $60 and I know it is decided by time of year. We will be there on 10/17.

I've found that with a buffet like Cape May, the two numbers they give are usually the child and adult prices. Holiday surcharges exist and can increase that by $5 I think.
Holiday time is Thanksgiving weekend, the week between XMas and New Years, Easter Week, and between Memorial day and July 5th. They may have expanded that a bit, but it's a good range to go by.
On 10/17, you're looking at $60 for an adult dinner. $36 seems high for a child, but I do know that we went there a few years back and walked out at like $140 for three adults and a child. That was with the 20% TiW discount.

The cost for the dinner buffet in October is $38.33 for an adult and $18.10 for a child. I was on hold with them when I read this, so I asked.

You'll need to do some hunting on the internet, but there are sites that offer WDW Info about menu items and their prices. Just bing it and see what comes up.
