Aug. 20, 1989 – Lionel Hampton and his Big Band performed at Disneyland for the first of a 7-day engagement.
Aug. 20, 1992 – Actress and singer/songwriter Demi Lovato was born in Dallas, Tx. Best known to Disney Channel fans as Mitchie Torres in “Camp Rock,” she also appeared in the series “As The Bell Rings” (as Charolette Adams).
Aug. 20, 1992 – Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” was released in theaters in Hong Kong.
Aug. 20, 2000 – “Lucky the Dinosaur,” the standalone Animatronic Dinosaur premiered at Disney’s California Adventure.
Aug. 20, 2000 – The Disney Channel Original half-hour series “In a Heartbeat” began airing. (Ended Mar. 25, 2001)
Aug. 20, 2003 – Disney released the CD Disney’s Greatest Hits, Vol. 3, which includes performances by Elton John, Sarah McLachlan, and Randy Newman.
Aug. 20, 2004 – The annual 3-day Winnie’s Hometown Festival began in White River, Ontario, Canada.
Aug. 20, 2005 – Conductor John Mauceri and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra pay tribute to Walt Disney with a performance of “Walt Disney: 75 Years of Music.” Special guests include Dick Van Dyke, Jodi Benson, Paige O’Hara, and Alan Menken.
Aug. 20, 2006 – The evening performance of Disney’s “Tarzan” (at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in N.Y.C.) benefits the Actors’ Fund of America. (The Actors’ Fund, which was founded in 1882, is a non-profit organization that provides for the social welfare of all entertainment professionals.)
Aug. 20, 2009 – Variety reported that director Robert Zemeckis was in talks with Disney for a remake of the 1986 animated Beatles film Yellow Submarine. Zemeckis planned to make the new Yellow Submarine in the same cutting-edge 3D process he used for the films “The Polar Express” and “A Christmas Carol.”
