Jan. 22, 2008 – Nominations for the 80th Academy Awards were announced. Disney/Pixar’s “Ratatouille” received 5 nominations (the most ever for a Disney/Pixar film). In addition to being a nominee for Best Animated Feature Film, the film also earned director Brad Bird a nomination in the Original Screenplay category (along with Jan Pinkava & Jim Capobianco). “Ratatouille” also received a nomination for Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Score) for composer Michael Giacchino; Achievement in Sound Editing (Randy Thom and Michael Silvers); and Achievement in Sound Mixing (Randy Thom, Michael Semanick and Doc Kane).
Jan. 22, 2008 – Hong Kong Disneyland kicked off Chinese New Year with the “Year of the Mouse” Celebration (ran through Feb. 24, 2008).
Jan. 22, 2009 – Tickets for Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion’s 40th anniversary event (at a cost of up to $475 each) sold out within 10 minutes!
Jan. 22, 2010 – The “Disney Trading Nights” was held in the Fantasia J Ballroom at the Contemporary Resort at WDW.
Jan. 22, 2010 – Approximately 400 Walt Disney World Cast Members volunteered to answer more than 15,000 calls for the “Hope for Haiti Now” telethon for the earthquake disaster relief fund to help benefit The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, Oxfam America, Partners in Health, Red Cross, INICEF, United Nations World Food Programs and Yele Haiti Foundation.
Jan. 22, 2010 – Maria Helen Alvarez, one of the original financiers of the Disneyland Hotel, passed away at age 88 in her Rancho Sante Fe, Ca. home. ( A millionaire by age 29, she helped create Tulsa, Oklahoma’s very first TV station.
Jan. 22, 2010 – Disneyland’s Main Street Cinema opened after a brief refurbishment to install a new floor.
Jan. 22, 2010 – About 400 WDW employees volunteered to staff phones during a global telethon aimed at raising money for earthquake-devastated Haiti.
Jan. 22, 2010 – Dick Van Dyke, one of the original stars of the 1964 feature “Mary Poppins,” made a surprise appearance in the touring stage version of “Mary Poppins” at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, Ca.
Jan. 22, 2011 – Darla K. Anderson won the animated trophy at the 22nd Annual Producers Guild Awards for her work as producer on “Toy Story 3.”
