Jan. 9, 2004 – To celebrate the success of NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover, Epcot guests, Mickey Mouse, and Cast Members signed a giant congratulatory postcard outside the Mission:SPACE attraction.
Jan. 9, 2004 – The new and improved “SaveDisney.com” website was launched.
Jan. 9, 2005 – The Walt Disney Internet Group announced that it is now offering an extensive array of character voice ringtones featuring the voices of Disney and Disney/Pixar characters.
Jan. 9, 2005 – Brazilian Adriano Bastos, 26 of Sao Paulo, posted a time of 2:19:16 winning the 2005 Walt Disney World Marathon. His second victory in the Florida marathon is the 18th-fatest Disney time ever. Amy Shertzer, 27, of Monument, Co. won the women’s full marathon with a time of 2:56:06. Michael McGrane of Somerville, Massachusetts, won the men’s half marathon leading the field of nearly 8,500 runners with a time of 1:13:08.
Jan. 9, 2006 – It was reported that the Royal Plaza in the WDW Resort had reopened after undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation. The hotel had been closed since August 2004, when it sustained damages from Hurricane Charley.
Jan. 9, 2007 – The 33rd People’s Choice Awards, honoring the best in popular culture for 2006, were held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, Ca. The Disney winners included “Pirate’s of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” won both Favorite Movie Drama and Favorite Movie, “Cars” won Favorite Family Movie, Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley (Pirate’s of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest) won Favorite On Screen Match-Up, “Life is a Highway” by Rascal Flatts (from Cars) won both Favorite Song From A Movie and Favorite Remake.
Jan. 9, 2008 – Darren Scott Snyder, a member of the maintenance team at Disney’s Animal Kingdom at WDW was killed in a deadly pile up on Interstate 4 in Florida.
Jan. 9, 2009 –The Walt Disney Co. and Hanes officially opened “Disney Design-a-Tee presented by Hanes” in Downtown Disney at WDW.
Jan. 9, 2010 – Chad Johnson and Emily Mortenson both of Rochester Hills, Michigan, won the top men’s and women’s finishers at the Walt Disney World Half Marathon.
Jan. 9, 2011 – Fredison Costa, last year’s runner-up, ended the domination of countryman Adriano Bastos at the WDW Marathon, pulling away over the second half of the 26.2 mile race and won by 6 ½ minutes.
