Dec. 17, 1961 – The “Babes in Toyland Exhibit” went on display in the Opera House at Disneyland. (Ended Sept. 30, 1963)
Dec. 17, 1966 – Roy Disney announced to Disney management and the Imagineering team that the company will continue to be run according to Walt’s wishes. (Walt Disney passed away 2 days ago.) He stated that Walt’s first name would be added to the title of the Florida theme park project.
Dec. 17, 1969 – Disney’s 1940 “Fantasia” was re-released in theaters. It would become immensely popular with teenagers and college students and for the first time turn a profit.
Dec. 17, 1971 – Roy O. Disney (Walt’s brother & the builder of WDW) decided not to attend the Disneyland Christmas Parade with his wife, son and grandchildren. Although he is not feeling well, he insisted that they go without him. (Sadly he would slip into a coma and pass away 3 days later.)
Dec. 17, 1972 – The Disney TV show aired “Salty, the Hijacked Harbor Seal”
Dec. 17, 1976 – The Disney film “Freaky Friday” had its premiere in Los Angeles, Ca. (Its general release was Jan. 21, 1977)
Dec. 17, 1976 – Walt Disney Productions released “The Shaggy D.A.,” a sequel to the 1959 “The Shaggy Dog.”
Dec. 17, 1977 – Disneyland’s “Very Merry Christmas Parade” debuted.
Dec. 17, 1986 – The Disney Channel aired “Vows From the Deep,” the 78th and final episode of “The Edison Twins.”
Dec. 17, 1990 - “Honey I Shrunk the Kids” Movie Set Adventure opened at Disney’s MGM Studios.
