We last saw the MK tree lighting in 2009.

We believe that the Epcot show ceased when the Chiristmas lights stopped at the end of the 2008 holiday season.

MAYBE at MK,
but they don't even put up the Christmas Tree anymore until after the taping of the ABC "Disney Christmas Parade" and that taping is the first weekend in Dec. so the MK tree doesn't go up until Mon-Wed of the following week.
(I'm thinking that if they do offer a "ceremony" its only short pre-recorded audio kind of thing, if that.

They do have a "lighting" of the Osborne Lights at DHS, and a "lighting" of the Castle Ice/Dream Lights at MK.

MK has a "ceremonial" (spelling ?) lighting each afternoon at the tree.

Are any characters involved?

No characters. A "young" guest(s) is invited to assist in the lighting.

I believe before the parade taping, the MK tree goes up in the Rose Garden, between the Hub and the Fantasyland bridge. Once the parade tapings are done, the tree is then moved to its traditional Town Square location.

I can recall at least in 2009 around 5:30pm, was the tree lighting ceremony, then around 6:00 was the Dreamlights.

They stopped doing that a few years ago, at least in '09 & '10 it wasn't done.

This is true. We were there last year the week before they taped the parade as well as the two days they did taping and there was no tree anywhere. It was kind of sad. We purposely scheduled this year's trip after the taping, so, the tree would be there.
