Aug. 29, 1982 – The “Captain Hook’s Galley” (Fast-food Restaurant) closed in Fantasyland at Disneyland. (Opened in 1969)
Aug. 29, 1989 – Disney announced an agreement-in-principle with Jim Henson to acquire the merchandising, licensing, and publishing rights to the Muppets. (Sadly, Henson would suddenly pass away in May 1990 causing the deal to temporarily end the following December.)
Aug. 29, 1992 – British children’s author Mary Norton passed away in Devon, England. (Her first book, “The Magic Bed Knob; or, How to Become a Witch in Ten Easy Lessons” published in 1943, and the sequel “Bonfires and Broomsticks,” became the basis for Disney’s 1971 live-action feature “Bedknobs and Broomsticks.”
Aug. 29, 1998 – The Disney Channel Original Movie “Brink” first aired.
Aug. 29, 2000 – Walt Disney Records released “Woody’s Round-up,” performed by the yodelin’ cowboy group Riders in the Sky.
Aug. 29, 2006 – The Disney computer animated film “Brother Bear 2,” Tale Spin: Volume 1, and Darkwing Duck: Volume 1 were released on DVD.
Aug. 29, 2008 – The record-setting Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps received a hero’s welcome at the Magic Kingdom in WDW, and was honored by the “Homecoming Parade.”
Aug. 29, 2008 – Passengers on the Aug. 28-31 sailing of the Disney Wonder cruise ship experienced a “Hollywood-style red-carpet” event with the premiere of the new Disney Channel TV series, “The Suite Life on Deck.”
Aug. 29, 2008 – Starting this day, Hollywood’s El Capitan Theatre presented a digitally restored version of Disney’s 1958 “Sleeping Beauty.” (Shown through Sept. 18th)
Aug. 29, 2010 – Doug Parks of Gotha, Fl., the man widely believed to be the very first Mickey Mouse at WDW, passed away at the age of 60.
