Mid October- would weather still be optimal for swimming- beach or pool? I am not familiar with the area.

You could Google "average October temps Hilton Head" and see if the weather is still good. It's still in the 70s where I live (Greenville) and I'm 5 hours from the coast. I'm assuming HHI is still warm enough to swim.
