While I'm hoping to take the next two trips to WDW, I'm contemplating visiting Disneyland CA in 2014! I know it is a long way off, but I want to start gathering as much information as possible for the trip. I guess the first order would be where should I stay?
I've been told there are three Disney hotels in DL. Could anyone here please describe these hotels and perhaps compare them price-wise to WDW resorts? I'm assuming all three are on the expensive side, but I'm hoping that I'm wrong.
All the details you can muster, please. Anyone? Thanks in advance. :mickey:

I stayed at the Paradise Pier Hotel in 2005 with a California Adventure view. The room was nice, with a good view of the park ,and I would stay there again when visiting DL. The Paradise Pier is cheapest of the three DL hotels.

Depending on the time of year you go I would estimate that you would spend $200-$450 for a standard room. This is at 2011 rates. Paradise Pier cheapest, Disneyland Hotel mid, Grand Californian most expensive.

Grand Californian is closest to the parks, in the middle of Downtown Disney. Disneyland Hotel is at the far end of Downtown Disney with the Paradise Pier Hotel not far from that.

PPH does not have as much to offer when it comes to restaurants and pools but the rooms are a nice size. DH has just opened their new pool area and a new restaurant & bar. GCH has several restaurants & bars and a great pool area. Both DH & GCH are steps away from many DTD restaurants. GCH has a spa.

If you don't feel the need to stay at a Disney property there are plenty of Good Neighbor hotels that are just as close, if not closer, than the Disney hotels and are significantly less expensive.

I hope it doesn't come to that, but it might. :mickey:

What time of year might you be thinking about? You have a good chance at getting a good discounted package deal through Disney if you come in the off season. Basically, that would be any time OTHER than summer, spring break (mid march-mid april), and around the major fall and winter holidays. My favorite time to visit the resort is October, followed by early December, then early March. Disney frequently offers "5 for 3 stay and play offers" where you pay for 3 nights and a 3 day park hopper, but get an additional 2+2 free. Also, they do 30% off room only discounts sporadically. Your best bet is to keep watching for the discounts. If you can book at a discount, I'd highly recommend either the Disneyland Hotel (complete refurbishment scheduled to be completed 11/11/11) or the Grand Californian. The Paradise Pier, in my opinion, is not worth the Disney price tag. For significanly less money, I'd choose a Good Neighbor hotel on Harbor close to the park entrance over Paradise Pier, if your finances won't allow for the DLH or GCH. I have to say, though, staying on property has its perks, along with the feeling of being "in the magic 24/7" that you'll miss from staying off property. However, you can WALK to most off property hotels, unlike at WDW, so staying off property at Disneyland is very different than doing so at WDW.
