We want to visit 4 parks with a 4 day base ticket in 3 days, can we do that. Go to one park in the morning and then use another day ticket to go to a different park at night?

Nope, you can't.
If you only have the base ticket, it will only allow you to go to one park per day. It won't allow you to 'use another day' off of your ticket. You'll get up to the turnstile and they'll turn you away because your ticket isn't valid for that park that day, and then they'll point you in the direction of guest services to upgrade to a hopper.
They basically force you to buy the park-hopper option. If you could just use another day on your pass, everybody would do it because it's only a few dollars to add an extra day on a pass, as opposed to adding the park hopper option.

My understanding is that no, you can't. Otherwise people would just buy extra days (which get cheaper with each added day) rather than adding the park-hopper option...

No you can not, as the other pp have stated. You would want a 3 day Park Hopper to hop all 3 days.

Think of a base ticket as a "one park per day" ticket. If you go to Magic Kingdom in the morning and then try to enter Epcot that afternoon, the Epcot turnstile won't unlock. The display will say "ACCESS DENIED" and the cast member's display will say "CROSSOVER NOT PERMITTED" and will give them additional info about your ticket. Thius means they will know exactly why you were denied entrance, so it's not like you can find a way to talk your way into the park.
