borrowing points for RCI exchange?

I know using points for RCI exchanges isn't necessarily the best use of points, but we are thinking of using some to let our son stay in California later this summer during a conference. We currently don't have points for this use year (August) and my son's trip is at the end of July so we won't yet have points from the new use year. It seems to me I remember someone telling me that you actually have to have the points in your account to use for RCI.....you can't borrow points to do this. Does anyone know if this is true? Thanks!
