Dec. 19, 1843 – A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens was first published in London by Chapman & Hall. Illustrated by John Leech, it would quickly met with commercial success and critical acclaim. Dicken’s tale would be credited with returning the holiday to one of merriment and festivity in Britain and America after a period of sobriety and somberness. In 2009 Disney would release a 3D feature film version of “A Christmas Carol.”
Dec. 19, 1868 – Novelist Eleanor H. Porter was born in Littleton, N.H. Her most famous novel “Pollyana” (1913) would later be made into a Disney live-action feature.
Dec. 19, 1914 – Animator, story man and Disney Legend Mel Shaw was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. He would work on such classics as “Fantasia,” “Bambi,” “The Rescuers,” and “The Lion King.”
Dec. 19, 1925 – Walt Disney’s 28th Alice Comedy “Alice’s Orphan” was completed.
Dec. 19, 1925 – Songwriter Robert Sherman, who wrote countless songs for many Disney features along with his brother Richard, was born in Manhattan, N.Y.
Dec. 19, 1929 – Floyd Gottfredson was hired as an apprentice animator by the Walt Disney Co. (In April 1930 he would start working on the four-month-old Mickey Mouse comic strip.
Dec. 19, 1936 – Disney’s Silly Symphony cartoon “More Kittens” was released.
Dec. 19, 1955 – The Mickey Mouse Club aired the episode “Today is Fun With Music Day” on ABC-TV.
Dec. 19, 1956 – The ABC-TV series Disneyland aired the episode “A Present for Donald.”
Dec. 19, 1957 – The ABC-TV series “Zorro” debuted the episode “Double Trouble for Zorro.”
