Dec. 17, 1770 – German composer and virtuoso pianist Ludwig van Beethoven was baptized. (The exact date of his birth is not known but experts believe his family may have celebrated his birthday on Dec. 16th). Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony, the Pastoral Symphony would be used in Disney’s 1940 “Fantasia.”
Dec. 17, 1894 – Arthur Fiedler, conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra for 50 years, was born in Boston, Massachusetts. (In October 1971, he would conduct the World Symphony Orchestra at the formal dedication of WDW.)
Dec. 17, 1931 – Disney’s Silly Symphony cartoon “The Ugly Duckling” was released.
Dec. 17, 1932 – Disney’s 8-minute black & white Mickey Mouse cartoon “Mickey’s Good Deed,” was released.
Dec. 17, 1935 – Actor George Lindsey, the voice of Lafayette the Bassett Hound in Disney’s 1970 “The Aristocats,” was born in Alabama. Lindsey’s Disney credits also include an episode of the 1982 TV series “Herbie, The Love Bug,” “The Rescuers,” and “Snowball Express.” (Fans of classic TV know him for his role of Goober Pyle on The Andy Griffith Show.)
Dec. 17, 1936 – Actor/pop star Tommy Steele was born in London, England. He would play the role of “Johnny Lawless” in Disney’s 1967 live-action feature “The Happiest Millionaire.”
Dec. 17, 1943 – Disney’s special cartoon “Chicken Little” was released.
Dec. 17, 1946 – Walt Disney returned home after a trip that has taken him from Atlanta (for the premiere of “Song of the South”) to New York (where he boarded the Queen Elizabeth) to England and finally Ireland.
Dec. 17, 1958 – Disney’s CinemaScope Featurette “Grand Canyon” had its premiere. (General release was Jan. 29, 1959)
Dec. 17, 1961 – Walt Disney’s Wonderful World of Color aired “Backstage Party.”
