Have you ever been at WDW with a sick child?

We're heading out Monday for a week long trip to WDW, ... and our 3 year old has come down with a virus (thankfully, not the stomach kind). Took her into the pediatrician on Friday just to confirm it's nothing serious, ... and they said it's just a virus she's got to fight through. We're pushing rest and liquids today and tomorrow, ... but I'm a little concerned on how the week could go (especially considering the possibility that she could still pass it on to her 5 year old sister. :(

I've never had a sick kid in WDW. I got the flu in WDW one year and both of my kids ended up with it, but luckily I was the only one sick in WDW. My youngest started getting sick the day we left to come home, and my oldest a day or two later.

Just want to wish you good luck with your trip. Kids tend to bounce back so quickly, I bet she'll be fine before your trip. Here's some pixie dust that the rest of you don't catch it.

No, just a sick me! Somewhere between leaving Edmonton and landing in Orlando 12 hours later I came down with a heck of a stomache virus. I still feel sorry for the people on the plane that had to listen to me....and then I had to take it really easy and not eat for about 3 days while I encouraged my family to go have fun without me...but I digress. Since your trip is already planned and you can't really postpone it, I'd say go ahead but plan more rest breaks and more regular meals and such than you might otherwise do. Keeping my fingers crossed she recovers this weekend and big sis stays healthy!

One of our trips DD 4 at the time had a horrible stomach virus. We were staying at the WL and they brought items to the room for us crackers, extra towels, bubble bath, etc. She actually got a card from the characters wishing her to "get well soon". Everyone else went along during the day and we stayed behind, once she was better we went to the parks, just made sure she was well hydrated and we took frequent breaks. Another time we went a friend came down with pneumonia while we were there. A doctor came to our room and medication was delivered to the front desk an hour later. She took it easy and ventured out as she felt better and we just took frequent breaks as well.

Once was a stomach deal, and the other was a cold. WDW has an uncanny way of healing you once you get there...maybe it's something in the water or air. I kept the liquids intake up, and breaks up as well too. I also just had to remember to eat appropriately so as to not aggrivate my situations. Nice steamy showers also helped any discomforts. (i turned the showerhead to the one that made the biggest spray and worked like a charm.) Also took a nap one day which i usually dont do but it helped me survive a busy MK! Play it by ear, and follow your gut. They won't lead you astray!

Usually kids at that age bounce back after a couple of days. I suspect she'll be fine by the time you leave, and you're definitely doing all the right stuff in the meantime!

Yes... Wasn't sick day we left, but next day. We rented a wheelchair for her so she didn't have to do all the walking and we could enjoy everything. After a day she was fine. We had rental car which was great that we didn't have to wait for bus and she could lay down in back of car. All you can do is wash hands often to try and keep from spreading.

Thanks for all the well wishes! She's doing a little better (hasn't run a temp in 24+ hours). No one else is showing signs of being sick, ... we're doing the hand sanitizer non-stop!

We hit the road at 7AM tomorrow and hope to pull in to WDW by 4 or 5.

I'll try and remember to post a follow-up to this thread next weekend and let you all know how the trip goes.

yes...way back in 92...we were down for a convention and our then two year old daughter wound up with chicken pox...fortunately it was a mild case...but still alot of time spent in the room...along with a fairly pricey trip to a clinic.

Much worse than that have been the multiple times I have found my own self ill while down there...three years straight with ear/sinus infections. The docs at the walk-in clinic next to downtown disney have been great to us...but if you plan on going my best advice is to approach it like a day at MK. Be there for opening, or be prepared for a lengthy wait.

One of our twins had a little cold that she developed shortly after we left, but the doctor said it wasn't anything serious and that she could still go. We took it very easy with her, though, and kept her bundled up and indoors a lot since it was so cold.

Another time our oldest daughter got really sick on our second day in WDW and we had to call a clinic for a "house" call to our hotel. Cost us a fortune, but he got her up and about same day so it was totally worth it!

BRRR!! When you mentioned the cold I checked the temps - it was a nasty week or so! We found it cold when we were there in 2008, and this looks much worse - even a couple nights below freezing! I LOVE WDW near Christmas, but this makes me feel better about my husband talking me into a May trip for next time :-)

My oldest came down with a cold on day one of a 2008 FEb trip. She was able to tough it out and of course low and behold, passed it to each of us (2 adults and 2 other kids!)

We all had our day of feeling really bad- achy, runny nose, headaches. Then we just had mild symptoms. It was a virus that just had to take its toll!

I agree that somehow WDW makes it better! We had to slow down a bit and we ended up having to miss a ressie because no one was up for it, but I tell you, it turned out to be a great trip.

So don't worry! Even if others come down with it, I am sure you'll make it and it will be fun!!!

My nephew was ill on our trip summer of 2009. We found that getting to the park early morning, leaving around 11:30, taking a very, very long nap or rest and enjoying the parks with out pushing it was best for us. Thankfully, my DW allowed me to take the our kids on rides!

Our first trip with our daughter, she was 18 months. The week before we left, we all got the Roto virus - we were very stomach sick for days. The night before we left, she didn't sleep very well. But we went ahead and took off for WDW anyway. We just made sure she was dehydrated. When she got to the parks, her little eyes lit up and she was able to start eating all the good food they had at Epcot. I'm glad we made the decision to go and not stay where we'd all be miserable for not going. :mickey:

Well, ... we pulled back in our driveway last night around 11:00PM.

Trip was another huge success. She continued to improve and was completely over the virus by the second day of the trip. The only lingering symptom was a cough, that was easily treated with the kid lollipop cough drops.

Speaking of cold, ... we went to Fantasmic last Monday night after we got there, and the wind chill was probably in the 15-20 degree range. We dressed as if we were going skiing. We all had 4 or 5 layers (including a ski bibs/jackets/full body suit for the kids)! On our last day (Friday), the highs were close to 80 degrees!

It is NO fun, but there are plenty of medical clinics and Celebration Hospital is nearby.

If you use the clinics you will probably have to pay out of pocket, and go to one that can prescribe a wide range of medications, if you do have a really sick child, I just recommend the Celebration ER, and thankfully while I've never had to use it, a good friend did for her asthmatic 2 year old, she is a nurse, and said only good things. Her daughter was back in action the next day too...
