Oct. 5, 1829 – Chester A. Arthur, the 21st U.S. President, was born in Fairfield, Vt. He could be visited along with all the U.S. Chief Executives at the “Hall of Presidents” attraction in the Magic Kingdom at WDW.
Oct. 5, 1902 – Entrepeneur Ray Kroc, famous for significantly expanding the McDonald’s Corp., was born in Oak Park, Il. In 1996, McDonalds would sign a ten year global marketing agreement with the Walt Disney Co. to promote and help each other. Ray Kroc and Walt Disney would first meet in an Army camp in Connecticut in 1918!
Oct. 5, 1922 – The Laugh-O-Gram animated short “Goldie Locks and the Three Bears,” directed by Walt Disney, was released.
Oct. 5, 1923 – Actress Glynis Johns, who played Winifred Banks in “Mary Poppins,” was born in Pretoria, South Africa.
Oct. 5, 1935 – Disney’s Silly Symphony cartoon “Music Land” was released.
Oct. 5, 1941 – The Fight For Freedom Committee’s stage play, It’s Fun To Be Free, debuted in N.Y.C. at Madison Square Garden. The cover art for the show’s program, which features a patriotic illustration of Mickey, Goofy, and Donald, has been designed by Disney artist Hank Porter. (The national Fight For Freedom Committee formed in N.Y.C. in April 1941, favored the immediate entry of the U.S. into WWII to aid in the defeat of Nazi Germany.
Oct. 5, 1949 – Disney’s 11th animated feature film “The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad” was released. The film featured the voices of Bing Crosby, who narrated “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” and Basil Rathbone, who narrated the tale of “The Wind in the Willows.”
Oct. 5, 1950 – Actor Jeff Conaway, who appeared in Disney’s 1977 “Pete’s Dragon,” was born in N.Y.C.
Oct. 5, 1955 – The third episode of “The Mickey Mouse Club” aired on ABC-TV “Today is Anything Can Happen Day.”
Oct. 5, 1955 – The Disneyland Hotel opened on its 60-acre site in Anaheim, Ca.
