Sept. 17, 1904 – Actor-comedian-composer Jerry Colona, the voice of March Hare in Disney’s 1951 “Alice in Wonderland,” was born in Bostan, Massachusetts. He also lent his voice “The Brave Engineer,” and “Make Mine Music.”
Sept. 17, 1917 – Disney Legend & Camera Effects artist Bob Broughton was born in Berkley, Ca. He would work on nearly every motion picture from “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” in 1937 to “The Black Hole” in 1979. Broughton would help Dick Van Dyke dance with animated penguins in “Mary Poppins” by using Color Traveling Matte Composite Cinematography, an award-winning technology that combines live-action and animated actors.
Sept. 17, 1927 – Disney’s Oswald the Lucky Rabbit film “Rickety Gin” was shipped to New York distributor M. Winkler.
Sept. 17, 1928 – Actor Roddy McDowell, the voice of Mr. Soil in Disney’s 1998 “A Bug’s Life,” was born in London, England.
Sept. 17, 1932 – Disney’s Mickey Mouse cartoon “The Whoopee Party” was released.
Sept. 17, 1945 – Actor Bruce Spence, the voice of Chum in the 2003 “Finding Nemo,” was born in Auckland, New Zealand.
Sept. 17, 1948 – Actor John Ritter (best known for his role as Jack Tripper on the TV series Three’s Company) was born in Burbank, Ca. He appeared in the 1971 Disney Live-action film “The Barefoot Executive,” the 1989 TV special “The Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park Grand Opening” and the 2002 TV special “Walt Disney World Christmas Parade.”
Sept. 17, 1954 – The Disney film “Once Upon a Wintertime” was released.
Sept. 17, 1957 – Sterling Holloway (the future voice of Winnie-the-Pooh) signed his first contract with the Walt Disney Music Company. The agreement ensured him star status on all recordings.
Sept. 17, 1960 – The “Celebrity Sports Center” located in Denver, Co. was built by a group of celebrity investors, including Walt Disney, Art Linkletter, and John Payne. It was later used as a training facility for future Cast Members for WDW. The center was eventually sold to a group of private investors on Mar. 29, 1979.
