Sept. 13, 1916 – British novelist, short story writer and screenwriter Roald Dahl was born in Wales. His most popular books included “The Twits,” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” and “James and the Giant Peach.” First published in 1961 in the U.S., “James and the Giant Peach” was released as a film by Walt Disney Pictures in 1996.
Sept. 13, 1925 – Legendary singer-songwriter Mel Torme, who in 1996 would record and release “A&E: An Evening With Mel Torme’ Live From the Disney Institute,” was born in Illinois.
Sept. 13, 1929 – A special afternoon event took place at the Fox Dome Theater in Ocean Park, Ca. Walt Disney, Ub Iwerks, and Carl Stalling (Disney’s musical director) gave a live presentation on how the Mickey Mouse shorts are created.
Sept. 13, 1941 – Walt Disney’s father Elias died in Los Angeles, Ca. at the age of 82.
Sept. 13, 1942 – Original Mouseketeer Judy Harriet Spiegelman was born in Los Angeles, Ca.
Sept. 13, 1959 – The Disneyland attraction “Rainbow Mountain Stage Coaches” closed in Frontierland.
Sept. 13, 1970 – The Disney TV show aired “Cristobalito, the Calypso Colt.”
Sept. 13, 1977 – Conductor Leoplod Stokowski, who in 1940 along with Walt Disney made the film “Fantasia,” passed away in his house in Hampshire, England, at the age of 95.
Sept. 13, 1978 – The Disney TV special “NBC Salutes the 25th Anniversary of the Wonderful World of Disney” aired.
Sept. 13, 1979 – Animator Don Bluth quit working for Disney and took a third of the top artists with him.
