Aug. 24, 1914 – Lieutenant Harry Coleburn, on his way to fight in the first World War, stopped at White River Ontario. There he found and purchased a black female Canadian bear cub he named Winnipeg, after his hometown. (Eventually his regiment would be called to fight and Coleburn would leave Winnipeg in the care of the London Zoo. Writer A.A. Milne and his son Christopher would later visit this zoo and become fond of the bear. Christopher would nickname her Winnie for short.)
Aug. 24, 1916 – Voice artist, writer, and actor Hal Smith, whose Disney voice credits include Philippe in “Beauty and the Beast,” Owl in “Winnie the Pooh Friendship: Tigger-ific Tales,” and Goofy in countless TV cartoons, was born in Petoskey, Michigan.
Aug. 24, 1942 – Disney’s 6th feature film “Saludos Amigos” had its world premiere in Rio De Janeiro. (U.S. release was Feb. 6, 1943)
Aug. 24, 1945 – Disney’s Pluto cartoon “The Legend of Coyote Rock” was released.
Aug. 24, 1958 – Actor Steve Guttenberg, who starred in the 1997 TV movie “Tower of Terror” (based on the WDW Attraction) was born in N.Y.
Aug. 24, 1963 – Film director and writer Kirk Wise was born in San Francisco, Ca. He would go on to direct such Disney movies as “Atlantis: The Lost Empire,” “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” and “Beauty and the Beast.”
Aug. 24, 1974 – Actress Jennifer Lien, the voice of Vitani in Disney’s 1988 “The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride,” was born in Illinois.
Aug. 24, 1975 – Actor and singer Drew Sarich was born in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1999, Sarich would move to Berlin, Germany to star as Quasimodo in Disney’s stage musical “Der Glockner von Notre Dame” (for over 580 performances.)
Aug. 24, 1978 – Trumpeter, bandleader, singer and composer Louis Prima, known for his contribution to Disney’s “The Jungle Book,” and provided the voice of the orangutan King Louie in the Disney animated feature, and sang the film’s hit song “I Wanna Be Like You,” died in a New Orleans, La. Nursing home.
Aug. 24, 1985 – Brooks Charles Arthur Burr became the 250-millionth guest at Disneyland.
