Is it better to request a type of room (near elevators, top floor, corner room, etc.) at check-in or on your reservations request? Which have you had more success with?
Thanks!

It's best to have your request noted on your initial reservation. A number of resorts pre-assign rooms, so if you wait until check in, you could be out of luck.
Requests are never guaranteed and there are a lot of factors as to whether or not they can meet them all. Resort occupancy is obviously a key part of it, also what time you arrive can make a difference. The later you show up, the less room inventory they have to choose from (for those resorts that don't pre-assign, or from other guests who make requests at check-in). List your requests by priority. At the very least, they do try to give you one of them.

We have always noted our request on our reservations and have been lucky enough to alway get our request. Good luck.
