How long has Disney described SSE as "looking like a giant golf ball" officially?

I know people have thrown that around for years, but I was surprised to find Disney doing it themselves on the Epcot page at disneyworld.com:

The Epcot theme park icon, Spaceship Earth, looking like a giant golf ball rising high above the horizon, welcomes you as you walk through the Park's main entrance.

When I was a kid (about 22-24 years ago) I remember telling all my friends that my daddy golfed that giant golf ball all the way down to Florida. LOL!

It is actually a little depressing that Disney describes it that way, instead of taking the opportunity to teach people what it really is. All part of trying to not have Epcot seem too intellectual, I suppose.

I remember back in the early 90s for sure they used to say how tall you'd have to be to hit SSE as a golf ball. Can't remember where I heard/read that though

I do recall that myself. That seems a little different to me, though, than just outright describing it as a golf ball.

My DS knows that he can get a rise outta me when he calls it exactly that. Now I guess I can't say anything if Disney is advertising it as such!

When I had more time on my hands, I planned on making a model Epcot with a golfball as Spaceship Earth... That didn't really pan out so well, but the thought still amuses me. :)

That's a new description for me. Although growing up I would ask if we were going to the park with the big ball and the tv screen that the woman could see us through (to make ADRs in the old days!). Wouldn't dream of referring to it that way now.
