May 24, 1918 – Oil millionaire and entrepreneur Jack Wrather, the oroginal owner of the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim, Ca., was born in Amarillo, Tx.
May 24, 1918 – Disney Legend Peter Ellenshaw was born in London, England. He would be best known for his incredible matte paintings in such Disney films as “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,” “Treasure Planet,” “The Story of Robin Hood,” and most famously “Mary Poppins” for which he would win an Academy Award. Ellenshaw’s talent and experience in special visual effects would be so respected that Disney would call him out of retirement after 10 years to work on the 1979 “The Black Hole.”
May 24, 1934 – “Hollywood Party,” a musical film starring Jimmy Durante, directed by Roy Rowland and distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer premiered. (It featured 31 stars like Laurel and Hardy, The Three Stooges, and Mickey Mouse, who introduced a Technicolor 7-minute sequence “The Hot Choc-Late Soldiers” created by Disney. (General release was June 1st.)
May 24, 1968 – In recognition of his distinguished public service and outstanding contributions to the United States and to the World, the President of the United States presented a Congressional Gold Metal to the widow of the late Walt Disney.
