Last week we went to Epcot and of course it was wonderful, but there was a recurring theme everywhere we went. Cast members chatting and ignoring guests was everywhere.

We waited for 10 minutes at Club Cool before having to get someone (and there were 3 cast members in our sightline) to ring up our purchases. We were ignored at The Seas and Universe of Energy. not that there was much to do but a smile (or glance?) or something would have been nice. Then at Mission: Space, the cm put their hand out to block going further before finding out orange or green then stood there with her arm raised, facing away from us while she finished her chat with the other cm.

what the heck? i have had occasional bad CMs but this seemed to be the norm that day!

It's too bad that this is becoming the norm. I notice it at fast-food restaurants, and some fast-casual places as well. Those jobs are boring and low-paying, so the employees entertain themselves as best they can. The management doesn't want to fire anyone because it's too hard to find someone willing to do the job.

I'm guessing there is a management problem at WDW. We've all had jobs where a good manager made all the difference. Perhaps a well-worded letter to Disney might make them take notice.

I agree that a manager is certainly the foundation of any well run establishment, so I think you may be very correct. I think I will send a letter letting them know what is going on.

Sadly, it's not just Disney World where this is happening (although IMO it's a lot less tolerable there than other places). I see it all over all the time.

I cannot tell you how many times recently I've had to stand at a counter waiting for someone who was obviously either chatting, texting, on a personal cell phone conversation, or doing some menial task that should be a lower priority than waiting on a customer.

But in Disney it really irks me, because there are definite safety implications of CM's who aren't paying full attention to their jobs. I personally don't think they should have two CM's stationed together anyplace where them chatting with each other is going to impact guest experience.

I noticed this too last week, and pretty much in every park, not just Epcot.

I noticed this as well the last time we were there in February. Although I understand CMs will need to talk to each other from time to time, it is nice to be acknowledged. We spend a lot of money to take a Disney vacation and some small gesture goes a long way. There was a time when you would never see a CM that wasn't smiling and waving hello.

Hmmm... I was in Epcot every day last week and didn't notice this. Of course that was mostly WS and the places you mention were FW. All the foriegn CM's I encountered were great.

Cms aren't always great. When I was little, and in line to see Minnie (like 2) I ran up to her. The cm pushed me, into the hard sidewalk. It was wrong that I ran up to her, I but all WDW did was get me an autograph book.

i remember the first visit to Disney (93), when all of the Cm's would say hello to the guests.
I agree, not anymore. Funny, I remember seeing tv shows about Disney, and the statement, Disney holds themselves to a higher standard, sadly at times that standard seems to be slipping.

i have been to Disney so many times and i can honestly say i have had only one bad experience. other than that, including the last one in December, every cast member has been awesome, and gone out of their way to be nice, helpful, and resepctful.
sorry you had a bad experience.
I heard a story once that Walt was in the park with a guest, and one of the CMs was busy talking to a friend and made Walt and his guest wait for just a little bit, so Walt had him fired, and later said it wasn't that he had an ego, but if someone would treat him like that, then they would treat a guest even worse.

We spend 5 weeks a year in the parks and rarely witness what you unfortunately experienced. I think if you look over an entire trip, this "assertion" unfairly paints the thousands of cast members who are doing the right thing with an inaccurate broad brush. I actually think it is amazing that it happens so infrequently, when you think about the numbers WDW hires and they live off PT people. Compare that to anywhere else and they remain the gold standard. Remember you are always welcomed to experience customer service at Busch Gardens, Universal, Sea World or Six Flags. I'm sure if you do, you'll run back to WDW and hug the nearest CM!:mickey:

Now I may be mistaken. A Cast Member may want to chime in on this. But I have a Cast Member handbook from 2009. I won't say where I got it but I collect anything Disney. First I have never seen a CM doing as some are here saying and I have been there 25 times over 27 years. But I can tell you that the use of a phone for anything is forbidden. Now if you saw someone with a phone (which they are not to bring in the parks) and texting then there is a problem with management not doing their jobs.

I would like to see what you are all talking about. Because I sure have never seen it or anybody that I know for that matter. Yes there are probably bad days. I have them where I work, but don't let it effect the way I deal with people. And if there are Cast Members out there doing this stuff then someone should bring it up management and mention names so this can be fixed.

i had never seen this issue, at least not so widespread and so open. I have a season pass and go 10+ times a year and most of those times we wind up in Epcot at some point. I think part of it is that is was very slow so im sure they were bored, but still, thats no excuse. rides where things were busier (like soarin, spaceship earth) where they had something to do continuously, this wasnt an issue, but attractions where people were more sporatic is where is problem was. Except Club Cool, which was pretty unexcusable considering they could see 3 people lined up at the register as the 3 of them chatted by the drink counter:mad:

i have never seen anyone texting before though, that is not acceptable in most workplaces!

Ok, I have to add my 2 cents as well. I just returned from Disney World on Sunday (May 4 - 8th) and was ashamed of the behavior that I witness all week long. Everyone from bus drivers to cast members at Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios (specifics in a moment). It was the first time I've ever thought that maybe I need to be spending my vacation dollars elsewhere.

As a side note - every single cast member at POFQ was outstanding and I can't thank them enough for a fantastic stay.

On the first day we went to catch a bus to MK and I waited, and waited. Buses for EPCOT, AK, DHS, and DD came and went at least twice. I walked in and found a manager on the floor and explained the situation and asked if she could call for a bus. She assured me she would take care of it. within 10 minutes a bus arrived and we were on our way. It was my party and a family with a couple of young children (who were seated right behind the driver) and no one else on board. The driver gets a call on the radio and afterwards throws the mic down and yells "Jesus Christ"!!!!! I couldn't believe it. I looked over to my DW and asked if she heard it, hoping that I misunderstood. Nope, she heard it too. OK, I'll let that slide I guess.....maybe an isolated incident.

The next morning at DHS, I arrived at opening and proceded to ToT :mickey:. Now I'm not an idiot and I know not every cast member is gonna get comletely into character but when we were loading into the elevator the young cast member was more concerned with putting her chapstick on that interacting with the guests ! This one got me a little angry but I though I might be over reacting since it is my favorite ride.

Day 3, AK. I'm just off of EE and taking in all the sights around the mountain. I see a gentleman walk up to a cast member at the single rider entrance. He asks if this is where he gets in line. There was a little discussion between them that I couldn't hear (I'm assuming she was trying to explain single rider) then all of the sudden I see her waving her arm like a mad woman and screaming at this guy "go around the corner, AROUND THE CORNER!" :thedolls: Now that was the last straw. I spent the next 30 minutes trying to find a manager, and was finally directed to the guest services building in the front of the park. They looked at me like I was just whining when I stated my concerns.

If this is the state of Disney parks today, I am truely ashamed! I actually called and cancelled my "bounce back" trip that I booked on the first day. I hope things start to turn around, and soon.

I see poor manners at stores and restaurants in my town...and that's one of the reasons we love WDW. We say that the CMs are PAID to be friendly and courteous. With this economy, there are plenty of people who would love to work anywhere, let alone WDW. I haven't been in that situation at WDW, but I hope that if that ever happens to me, I would report it to the person who appears to be in charge. I think service will improve if people start voicing their displeasure.

We had a CM not care one bit that buses weren't stopping at Contemp. At DTD one told us to just stand in the rain and wait for a cab to show up. Another refused to ring up a purchase at a MK shop.

I'm not so sure I have witnessed this kind of behavior from the CMs in WDW but if it ever happened to me (and it has happened to me elsewhere), all I would do is to politely interrupt their conversation and move on with the business.
Politely BUT firmly.
And guess what?
Most of the times they understand they were doing something wrong. They will even apologize. Just remember to be Polite.

First to Jason, you admit you did not hear the conversation, so you have no idea what was said to the CM. You are out of line to judge someone without all of the facts then try and report them to their managers. Fortunately Disney has managers that understand there are two sides to a coin and do not overreact to people like you who overreact. You complained about some "yelling" at someone else that had nothing to do with you and you wonder why they looked at you like they did? I would love to take you up on your offer, please spend your vacations elsewhere. I'm sure the folks at Universal or Sea World will look at you with complete concern,

Guests spend a huge amount of money to go to Disney and expect to see the CMs behave a certain way. I, along with many others do not want to have to deal with lack of manners and respect when at Disney and would hope you feel the same way.
That being said, I understand that sometimes a CM is having a bad day, that things need to be discussed and need to send a text message to someone. But at the same time, when they are interrupted, I expect them to be courteous.

We love Disneyworld and have never had any problems at all with the CM's....they are always helpful and courteous. Everything is sooooo clean at Disneyworld. The only time I have ever had a problem with cleanliness was last month at the restroom at Toon Town....it was really bad, but obviously there was some kind of plumbing problem going on and as I turned around to leave the restroom a cast member was there with a sign closing down the restroom. We were never in the area again after that for me to see if the problem had been fixed.

That could have been me! I liked this response because it sums up the reality of working for Disney. CMs are not robots, and when two of them are assigned to the same location (not all that common actually) they are likely to chat with each other. They are probably friends after all. But when a guest approaches, their attention must be on the guest. And guests should not be able to overhear private conversations between CMs.

Texting or talking on cell phones, however, is another matter. It is completely forbidden, and should be reported to an area manager. The managers are fairly easy to spot once you know what to look for. They can usually be found in the same area of the park as the CMs, wearing business casual, and carrying both a Blackberry and a park radio with an ear bud.

We were there for 10 days 2 weeks ago. We didnt really run into any rude Cms. The only one I can think of is a CM on Mission space that had an attitude and snatched our green cards from our hands - i was taken aback a bit...but I just let it go.... All in all - the only rude people i encountered were other guests...

With the turn-over I expect being very high, I think Disney management does an outstanding job training CMs. (Except for the bathroom situation lately - so messy but why do people have to be such pigs? Clean-up after yourselves. Were you raised by wolves? Sorry, for another time and a different thread.)

I have encountered rude CMs and also fantastic ones. I think all in all, they are an outstanding group of employees. They are underpaid, spend hours on their feet in the heat, humidity, pouring rain, (take your pick on extreme weather conditions) and still are expected to greet every grumpy, whiny, complaining, annoying guest with a smile and pixie dust.

Cast members have made me laugh, cry (in a good way) and make me say "what were they thinking?" But I catch myself before getting angry and remember they are human.

I don't want to offend anyone who was treated rudely. This is not my intent. I just want to point out that most people do not spend their entire work day focused entirely on "work". There are phone calls, "water cooler" visits and Intercot time. :secret: I am guilty of it and have at occasion "yelled" at a co-worker. It happens. I'm not proud of it, but hey, I'm human too.

So here to all the cast members who have made Disney a great place to visit. You guys rock!

I think people in general are becoming more demanding and rude. I know that last year on turnstiles many more than usual were very rude to other guests and to some of the CM's that were working there.

On the parades you find some of the worst though. One CM (older lady) politely informed one of the guests that the area she was in was not a parade viewing area (on the Liberty Bridge) and the lady responded by punching the CM in the stomach.

Disability areas get filled up pretty quickly for parades and many guests that wait until just a few minutes before the parade get very irate that there is no more space available in those areas. When we tell them that basically the entire parade route is disability accessible and that they can line up on the sidewalk areas also, a lot of them get upset with that. Many also feel that we should have "bleacher style" seating for the disability areas.

I could go on and on about some of the things we encounter everyday but I won't. Not really picking on the disabled or any other "group" of people.

The above poster hit some of the points very well, especially "spend hours on their feet in the heat, humidity, pouring rain, (take your pick on extreme weather conditions) and still are expected to greet every grumpy, whiny, complaining, annoying guest with a smile and pixie dust", but you know what, I still have the most fun while working in the Parks than any other place I have ever worked, and look forward to every day that I am there, and I qualify as a Senior Citizen.

I could not have said it better.. I think a lot of guests are rude to CM's and other guests. Be it at parades or in line at some ride. I am afraid that more guests then CM's are the ones that are grumpy, whiny, complaining or flat out annoying people. I can't tell you how many times our family has been run over so some other family can get in some line before us. We let it go. They are so proud of themselves. It only makes them look bad.

And on the restrooms. Yes sometimes they can be a little messy. But just remember.. A CM did not make that mess. It is your responsibility to clean up after you are done. I have seen worse at 5 star hotels then at WDW.

Like I have said before I have never witnessed a CM being rude or on the phone (which is against the rules) or any of the other complaints that keep popping up on these threads

I just spent a week at Disney and did not have
any of the issues that are reported here. The
cm's were very friendly and wanted to help. I
always talk to them and make little jokes here
and there. They work hard and need a little
action from us at times to keep them on their
toes. Some people just don't smile or try to
interact with the cm as I do. It gets you a lot of
little perks at times. I had a wonderful time and
everyone was nice. The weather was perfect.
Wish I was still there. Going back in October!

maybe im in the minority here, when me and dw were there in march, we noticed the complete opposite, very friendly, waving and greeted us with smiles, don't get me wrong we have noticed little things but not to the extent that everyone else has. i do agree about management, something should be done to curtail cell phone usage, where i work cell phones are not permitted to be used during working hours, they may used during breaks only, and if we are caught using them we get written up, im a manage of my department and i had to write up people because of this, and if they don't like they can leave.

I'm not posting to defend any CM's with cell phones as policy is that they are not to be used "on-stage".

However, the Disney communication system throughout the park is with the use of cell phones and many CM's have them assigned so it is possible to see a large number of CM's with cell phones but they will have ear pieces and inline microphones for use (at least most of the time but not always).

I have used my personal cell phone a couple of times (with permission) to try to contact "lost parents" when a child knows their parents phone number. This is, most of the time, an allowable use of a personal phone.

I wasn't so lucky. The women's bathrooms by Pirates, inside Pecos Bill's, near City Hall and the worst (near Tomorrrowland Station) were all horrible, probably due to the crowd levels. I wouldn't want to clean it and feel sorry for the CMs who have to. My complaint isn't against the CMs and Disney but against my fellow park guests. Would these folks leave their bathroom that way? I sure hope not. It was disgusting.

Reading this makes me so sad. We just came back from a wonderful WDW trip, and one thing we keep talking about is the great service, attitudes, smiles, assistance, etc, from the CMs. There were only two exceptions: one was on the parade route at MK, the other was, sadly, a consierge at AKL.

It just goes to remind us that one or two bad apples can, indeed, spoil a bushel. If this is becomming commonplace, as it sounds like it might be, I hope the Disney HR folks will look into it and make the necessary changes so that our Disney experiences can continue to be magical. I'll volunteer to go teach them some "Mickey manners!"

We just got back from our trip last week when we stayed from May 5-12 and we only had one time when a CM was kinda rude. My husband was walking to Mission Space to ride with his friend and my daughter wanted to go with him. She was running to him which I agree she shouldn't have done but she was yelling for her daddy and the CM stationed there kept blocking her from him. I understand that there's a safety risk to just let a kid run up there but instead of just blocking her everytime she tried to pass him he could've asked her the first time who she was looking for. Even when my husband came down the walkway for her, he was trying to block her after my husband told him she was his daughter. She shouldn't have run but what he did scared her even more. Other than that, everyone else was very cheerful and friendly and always said hello to my girls and called them princesses and I thought the bathrooms were very well maintained.

OMG! The bathrooms can be a mess but I never would be angry at a CM for that. I do wonder how some people can behave like that in a bathroom and if their house is also a pigsty! But it is never a CM's fault.
I do think that Disney could make sure there is adequate staff to clean up after these pigs and hope they are well paid for taking care of the mess.:mickey:My heart always goes out to the CMs that clean the bathrooms.

Our bus driver from the AK to POP even announced it over the PA system! Everyone was wonderful. :thumbsup:The bathrooms were always clean when we used them too! Any of you CMs on here, I thank you for all that you do to make our vacations so magical! :D Thank you for keeping the parks and restrooms clean too! :thanks: I hold other places we visit to "Disney standards" and sadly, most don't even come close to measuring up! We've thought about traveling to other places for a vacation, but even my DH agrees that nothing will beat a WDW vacation! I also make sure that I treat the CMs kindly, use manners with them, smile at them, thank them, etc. Especially when they go above and beyond! :pixie: They are humans too! I have some old SOP manuals from Disneyland and they all say that talking among castmembers, unless important to the job, is forbidden. Of course, they are from the 60's....

This is how it should be everywhere! When I worked in retail, I didn't even have to be told to not chat on the job. If the store was dead empty, there is still plenty to do other than chat with co-workers. But if you are talking, you shut up and pay attention to the customer as soon as they enter the store, or your area. Common sense should tell people that. I think it has very little to do with low wages or boring jobs- it's about a sense of entitlement and no sense of pride in a job well done! It's the same mentality that says that taking ink pens or note pads from work is okay, because "they don't pay me enough anyway".
It's annoying in the grocery store when the bagger and cashier won't even glance my way during their conversation, but it's doubly annoying at WDW, considering the standard they set in the past.

AGREED!!! I don't complain much about messy bathrooms, unless the garbage smells, they are out of TP or paper towels, or there are clogged or broken toilets. But trash on the floor, unflushed toilets, and soap or water around a sink- clean it up yourselves, people! It amazes me how people act when they know someone else will clean up after them.

I have a Information and Research Travel business. In December I am going to WDW for about a week. I have bought an extra large video card for my camera and am planning on documenting my whole visit from the time I get up to the time I go to bed each day. I am pretty detailed so I will see how it goes. I am interested in what I will be seeing during this trip.

As a local AP holder, I visit WDW frequently - on average about once every 3-4 weeks for at least a full day. It is incredibly rare for me to see anything but stellar guest service from CMs. There are two things I've noticed that may be influencing some of the recent experiences you're describing.

One was what felt to me like a massive uptick in rude guests. Like the entire population of New York City had descended on the parks with their bad attitudes turned up to eleven. Related to that was something we noticed when we were there two weekends ago, which was a huge number of guests from perhaps Spain or perhaps some other Spanish-speaking country other than Mexico. Those folks were not rude, but they were struggling with the language barrier and the ones we saw seemed to have really peculiar problems. And it was CRAZY crowded that weekend, way worse than normal for that time of year. I saw a lot of CMs with the deer-in-the-headlights look that weekend. That level of stress will challenge even the most pixie-dusted CM.

The other thing I've noticed is that there are about a zillion new hires right now, and a lot of them are from abroad. Again, the fact of being from outside the U.S. is not a problem in itself by any means, but language struggles or adjusting to cultural differences is a challenge when you're trying to do that on top of learning a new job and dealing with a big crowd. Having lots of new trainees also means more CM to CM communication as part of the training process. Now obviously a trainer, or even a fellow CM trying to be a role model for a newbie, is massively failing if they're talking to their station-mate instead of interacting with the guests. But if you're trying to explain something to a newbie, I can imagine a situation where you might be absorbed in that and forget what you're supposed to be doing.

None of this excuses poor behavior, but it may serve as some possible explanations for certain individual instances.

Complain. If they hear enough, they will have to enforce changes. We were on Mission Space and one of the CM's was being very careless. I immediately found a manager and reported him.

As a former retail manager, not at disney at a..lets say esspresso haven and then a fruity tech giant, the constant problem is, and not saying this in a negative fashion, younger employees with a permanant electronic umbilical cord. These individuals have grown up in an era that is constantly connected and being out of the loop is wrong in their minds it is an addiction. And a lot of times I discovered its not just friends texting or social networking its news rss feed and the like. And while this is annoying to us in the "older" generations (I say that in a sarcastic way because I am going to be 31 next week). They have never been removed from it, going to work and being told they can't have it is like going through withdraw for them. I hated to fire anyone and lived on my pt afterschool workers now my store was small enough that I was able to monitor everyone I could say put it away or take it from them and put it in there locker until thier shift was over, however at Disney I cannot imagine how many workers you would have to manage and to keep up with that would be exhausting. Also a lot of time a manager is dealing with a more pressing issue (they never want you to see the negative its their job to deal with it) and may not notice unless you bring it to their attention.
Yes CM's should know the rules, they should respect that they work on stage but the truth is they are not getting paid a lot so they may not put out that effort.
I would hate to see Disney come to this, and personally I have only had a handful of "issues" during my times at Disney and they are usually misunderstandings about disability issues through poor communication, mine and the CMs.
I just hope that with money being slim everywhere Disney is not cutting on training and that these employees learn that Walt's vision was something to be lived not just a part time job to get by on.

We did encouter a couple of snippy ones, but the rest were excellent. :number1: Now some of the guests...:shake:

First to Jason, you admit you did not hear the conversation, so you have no idea what was said to the CM. You are out of line to judge someone without all of the facts then try and report them to their managers. Fortunately Disney has managers that understand there are two sides to a coin and do not overreact to people like you who overreact. You complained about some "yelling" at someone else that had nothing to do with you and you wonder why they looked at you like they did? I would love to take you up on your offer, please spend your vacations elsewhere. I'm sure the folks at Universal or Sea World will look at you with complete concern,

I totally agree!! Be careful though.............chastising a constant complainer on here will get you a visit from the mod police!!!:mickey:

 It's awful. Can't take trash to a can that's two feet way. Giant messes on tables and stinky leftovers outside their hotel door.

The last time we stayed at ASMovies I noticed how dirty it was. The room was filthy and had a couple of burned out light bulbs that were apparently too much to change. The food court had garbage on the floor and I witnessed CM's simply walking right by it and I observed, with my own two eyes, a spider web above the drink station. The web had been there for a long time as it looked like something out of the Haunted Mansion.

I've learned that this is what one can come to expect from the work ethic of this new "millenial generation"

I agree. In the 17 years I have been going to Disney, I have noticed that the guests are more of a problem than the CM's. I don't think I have ever encounted a rude or lazy CM during any of my visits, however, I have seen some "I'm so entitled" guests that have pushed my buttons and the CM's have to deal with them on a much larger scale than I do. I try to compliment the CM's when I see them doing something above and beyond. Make sure you get everything in context before making that complaint. :stop::judge:
