Apr. 12, 1907 – Bernard August “Hardie” Gramatky, Jr., one of the Great American watercolorists, as well as an author and illustrator, was born in Dallas, Tx. He would start his career in animation working at Disney from 1929-1936. Gramatky would be best known for his classic Children’s book, Little Toot. Several years later, Little Toot would be animated by the Disney Studio and be included as one of the musical segments in “Melody Time.”
Apr. 12, 1925 – Roy Oliver Disney (Walt’s brother and business partner) married Edna Francis at Uncle Robert Disney’s house in Los Angeles, Ca. It is the same house where Walt lived and set up shop after first arriving in Hollywood. As Walt owns a motion picture camera, he shoots the days events. (In 1930 Roy and Edna would have a son named Roy Edward.
Apr. 12, 1926 – Actress Jane Withers, best known for being one of the most popular child film stars of the 1930s and early 1940s, was born in Atlanta, Ga. She is one of the voices of Laverne the gargoyle for Disney’s 1996 “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” Actress Mary Wickes is also the voice of Laverne, but sadly passed away during production. Withers provided the remaining dialogue, and later the voice for Laverne in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame II.”
Apr. 12, 1945 – The Disney Training Film” Prevention and Control of Distortion in Arc Welding” was delivered to the Lincoln Electric Co.
Apr. 12, 1946 – Disney’s Pluto cartoon “Pluto’s Kid Brother” was released.
Apr. 12, 1964 – At the soon-to-be-opened World’s Fair in N.Y. Walt Disney, Henry Ford Jr., and Robert Moses, visited the Ford Pavilion. The three were photographed by the press riding the “Magic Skyway.”
Apr. 12, 1987 – Disney’s 2-hour TV movie “Bride of Boogedy” aired.
Apr. 12, 1992 – The Euro Disney Resort, featuring Euro Disneyland Park opened in France. Euro Disney also premiered its 5 Hotels; Hotel Cheyenne, Santa Fe, Newport Bay Club, Hotel New York, and Disneyland Hotel, and the campground, Davy Crockett Ranch, located several miles away from the main resort.
Apr. 12, 1995 – The “Ohana” Restaurant opened in the Polynesian Resort at WDW.
Apr. 12, 1995 – The Los Angeles production of “Beauty and the Beast” opened at the Shubert Theatre. Most of the Original Broadway Cast including Susan Egan, Terrance Mann, Gary Beach, Beth Fowler, Burke Moses, and Tom Bosley reprise their role for the production.
