View Full Version : Best Rivalry In Sports

Last night I heard an ESPN commentator say the Ohio State vs Michigan rivalry was the premiere rivalry in sports. I would beg to differ.

So In your opinion what are the best rivalries?

College:
Auburn vs Alabama:
No offense to anyone but the passion of Auburn vs Alabama cannot be touched. If you live in the south you know this is true. I have zero rooting intrest in either team but I can see the obvious.

Pro:
Red Sox vs Yankees:
As much as I love the NFL and probably would have siad Bears vs Packers years ago, the Yankees Sox war has overtaken any NFL rivalry IMO.

Greenlawler, I do agree with Alabama/Auburn. A good friend of mine is an Auburn grad. She doesn't care much for football, and she also doesn't care much for Bama :secret: . Where I don't agree is this Yankees/Red Sox "rivalry" ESPN and Fox shove down the country's throats every year. The only reason why it's halfway relevant in my 20 year lifetime was the 04 ALCS and that was courtesy of a Yankee choke. The TRUE pro rivalry does involve a Boston team, the Bruins. Bruins/Canadiens is the only sports rivalry where a fight is guaranteed to break out every time these two teams play and it's great hockey as well.

I'd offer up Duke-Carolina in basketball.

Just as a preface, I am a SEC and southern fanboy all the way... :D

While one team hasn't been up there the last few years, Florida State-Florida is always a huge game. Auburn-Alabama and Florida-Georgia would also be up there too. Mississippi State-Ole Miss, Auburn-Georgia as well in no particular order...

Where I don't agree is this Yankees/Red Sox "rivalry" ESPN and Fox shove down the country's throats every year.

Are you kidding me? The Red Sox-Yankees rivalry is brutal and not a media invention. Try walking around NYC in a Red Sox hat. Or visiting Boston in Yankees gear. It's not unusual to have things thrown at you, names called, or worse. There have been murders, yes, over the rivalry. Ridiculous and sad but true. The Red Sox and Yankees fans will name their team as their favorite and "Anyone who isn't" the opposite team as their next favorite. Bruins/Canadiens? Please-- that's just the nature of hockey. It's not a big rivalry.

That said, rivalries seem more significant depending on where you live. I've lived in MI, and yes, I would agree that it's one of the biggest rivalries in sports. And before I lived in MI, I heard of it. I was not aware of the Auburn/Alabama rivalry at all. So, one of the biggest? Not sure. To be a big rivalry, to me, it has to have a long-standing history that affects fans not just when the teams are currently playing, but through the years until it reaches legendary proportions widely known and reported outside just the region where the teams are popular. And I think college rivalries are generally more significant than pro sports rivalries (even though I had to attest to the very real bad feelings that often come between Yanks and Sox fans).

I also think it changes based on the competitiveness of the games. Being from Cleveland the OSU v UM games and the Browns v Steelers games used to be huge events but with both rivalries being so one sided lately I couldn't even get motivated to send my friend who is a UM fan the "We Don't Give a <Snip> About the Whole State of Michigan" song disguised as something else like I usually do. Also being a Browns fan has been completely depressing since '95.

Maybe its a result of watching Bellino and then Staubach dominate Army for the four years I watched the game, along with 4000 fellow midshipmen, from the stands of Veterans Stadium, but the Army-Navy game still stands as a highlight of each season. Unlike most rivalries, it is a true national rivalry...actually, it is an internationally followed rivalry...I recall rising way before dawn to listen to the 1967 game, via the Military Auxiliary Radio System relay, while in Southeast Asia...and Navy won!
GO NAVY, BEAT ARMY!

rivalries all depend on where you live. Yes up here in Big 10 country Michigan/Ohio St football is pretty big. Years ago it used to be who won went to the Rose Bowl. Not so much anymore. While I agree Alabama/Auburn is a rivalry. The true college football rivalry is Army/Navy. No national championships getting in the way. This one has huge bragging rights that go all the way up to the White House.

The proximity between the 2 teams also festers good and not so good feelings between each teams fans. Example Duke/Carolina has less than 10 miles between the 2 campuses so this is a really heated rivalry.

Good Thread for debate

Agreed. I went on a whale watch at Cape Cod once wearing a Yankee hat and thought I was going to get keelhauled!

You go to Boston, and their obsession with hating everything Yankees is almost as passionate as their love for the Sawks.

Go to Yankee Stadium before a game against the Red Sox and there are as many vendors outside the stadium selling anti-Sox merchandise as there are selling Yankee stuff.

It's BRUTAL.

FSU-Florida
Georgia-Florida
Alabama-Auburn
OSU-Michigan

There are 100s of "rivalries". It depends on what sport, what location.

Since the question is "best" and not "most popular" the answer is...

Easton / Phillipsburg

I believe it is still the only High School football game shown live on national TV.

Yankees/ and that Boston team is a major one.

I also agree with Scar- Easton-P-burg was even on Espn twice! Pretty good for High School Football!

I understand that regional bias plays a role. I understood that before I asked the question.

I thought Army vs Navy would get some response. I do think it is proably the second biggest rivalry.

I have noticed some votes for Florida vs Georgia. Great rivalry but not even the best in the SEC. In fact I would rate it below Tennessee vs Alabama, and maybe even below Miss St. vs. Ole Miss. Florida has so many rivals: Fla St., Georgia, Tennessee etc..

The question was and remains what is the greatest rivalry in college and pro sports? No matter the sport of location.

I would suggest if you are interested, look up Lipscomb vs Belmont now that is a fierce rivalry.

Another vote for Alabama/Auburn. A close friend is a 'Bama grad and that's the most heated rivalry I've ever seen.

I'd have to put Red Sox/Yankees a close second.

Old school? How about Sixers/Celtics?

Pagan

Dolphins/Jets is pretty heated also.

Rangers/Islanders gets people going also...enough that the organist at Madison Square Garden doesn't play a certain tune anymore, and if anyone is caught singing the altered lyrics to it, they get removed from the arean.

Wanna go old school? How about Don Prudhomme/Tom McEwen?

Well, being from Ohio, my bias leans towards Ohio State-Michigan being the greatest rivalry. Your hard core fans want one team of the pair to be undefeated every year and the other to be winless, and it depends on whether you wear scarlet and gray or blue and gold as to which team you want to be which. And the jokes that go back and forth, some of them funny, some of them downright disgustingly cruel.

I also whole heartedly agree with those posters who say it mostly depends on where you live as to what you will say is the greatest. Shall we split it down the middle and say north of the Mason/Dixon line its Ohio State-Michigan and south of the line its Alabama-Auburn? Because I can honestly say I have never cared about Bama-Auburn, no disrespect to either team or their fans, it's just not important in this area of the country.

I like the argument of Army-Navy too, as that has followings all throughout the world, where ever our men and women are based.

Being a Midwesterner, I must admit that I agree that Michigan-OSU is a huge rivalry. I realize that the competition hasn't been too even the past few years, but if you look at it historically, it's huge, especially during the Bo-vs.-Woody days. When I was growing up, I didn't realize that all those other Big 10 schools had a chance to go to the Rose Bowl, too, because it always came down to the U-M/OSU game.

Also, since my family is from Alabama, I know that Alabama-Auburn is a big deal. This divided my "Alabama relatives" pretty much down the middle.

Finally, as much as I love my Wolverines, I think Yankees-Red Sox is probably the biggest rivalry of all.

Hammer

"Best" is so subjective. Also, as others have stated, it depends on your location for most rivalries. The exception is Army vs. Navy. I also like Army vs. Navy because while it is heated, there isn't any real nastiness behind it as seems to run through some of the regional rivalries.

Let me use Florida vs. Florida State as an example. All of my cousins went to either Florida or Florida State (my sister and I (and our mother) are the exception for the women in the family who are college educated) and some of them hold it against the other side and think less of them due to where they went to school, which to me is absolutely ridiculous :shake: .

Of course, a favorite slogan of mine is "I root for 2 teams, Boston College and anyone playing Notre Dame". For those who do not know, BC and Notre Dame are the only Catholic colleges/universities which have Div. 1-A football programs.

Most of the rivalries ebb and flow based on the competitiveness of the two teams. This is particularly true of the pro teams. Once, the Rams and 49's were a real "us vs them"....Now, no one cares. The same is usually true of the Dodgers and Giants...and the Cowboys-Redskins rivalry has been luke warm at best for years.....but the Yankees and Redsox rivalry even survived the years when neither was competitive.

As for high school rivalries, down here, they talk about Byrnes-Dorman as if it really matters. But the Easton-P'burg game....As I recall, Easton and P'burg each rank 1st or 2nd in their respective states in total wins...The game is always played on Thanksgiving....Way back, while in High School, a classmate's dad was able to get some of us tickets to Lafayette College field, where the game has long been played....Don't remember the year, but two long time coaches in the rivalry once both retired at the end of the game.
So from South Carolina (by way of Saylorsburg, PA, ect) another vote for the Red Rovers vs the Stateliners.

Hmmmmm. I'm going to have to take this thread international:

Biggest is easy:

Game: Cricket.
Matchup: India V Pakistan

A nation of over a billion people and a nation of 170 million. They share a (oft contested) border and are separated to varying lengths by culture and religion. They also happen to both be obsessed with the same sport. There's not much of a competition.

Most Heated:

This would have to be one of two soccer derbies: The Old Firm, Rangers Vs Celtic and the Superclasico, Boca Juniors Vs River Plate. The two rivalries have a meaning far greater than the game (religion and national identity of the former case, class identification and politics in the latter) and are red hot. I would never consider either of them the "Best" however because from the outside they are more unpleasant than their status is worth and TBH both leave an unpleasant taste in my mouth.

Best? I don't know. As a cricket lover I find that the romanticism and heritage of the Ashes (England vs Australia) is as unique as you get. If you are a sports lover of any kind and don't know the story of the urn and what it represents look it up - it's worth it.

Oh, and because you folks are probably too polite to say it I will. Anything involving the US, Russia and the Olympics is must-watch stuff.

I believe it is still the only High School football game shown live on national TV.

There is a high school football rivalry in Louisville, Kentucky that has been going on since the late 1800s. It is also shown on one of the ESPN channels every year and betting on it shows up on the boards in Vegas. It is the annual St. X-Trinity football game. A great rivalry. Played at the University of Louisville's stadium because no high school football stadiums can hold all the people who attend it every year.

However, I'd go with Liverpool-Manchester United from the English Premier League in Britain. Not only is it a rivalry between regions, but it also has to do with socio-economic status as well. Fights break out all the time between supporters. And, this is the only rivalry match/game where I've seen a supporter escorted out with a dart embedded in his cheek because the opposing club's supporters were throwing them at the them. YIKES! No love lost between these 2!

Here's the deal,

So the question is greatest rivalry. As I have stated more than once I know there is regional bias, but it does not mean that we cannot debate the question. It does mean you have to look at it with national perspective. The question was not "greatest rivalry in your area of the country". That's really not a great question because we all know what rivalries dominate certain parts of the country.

For example I would say without a doubt that Duke vs Carolina is the greatest college basketball rivalry. I do not live on the coast. I have grown up in the middle of SEC country and I can see that the basketball rivalries here even Louisville vs Kentucky which is great, do not measure up to Duke vs. Carolina.

Great College Fottball Rivalries:
Michigan vs Ohio State, Florida vs Fla State, Oregon State vs Oregon, Nebraska vs Oklahoma, USC vs Notre Dame, Texas vs Texas A & M, Miami vs FSU, UCLA vs USC, Stanford vs Cal, Florida vs Georgia, Tennessee vs Alabama, Georgia vs Georgia Tech, and of course Army vs Navy.

All of these are great and dominate someone's corner of the world. I am sure I omited some, however with the exception of Army vs Navy, it makes a big difference as to how well the teams are playing in the intensity of the rivalry. So my answer to the question is, Auburn vs Alabama. I have lived in different states, but have never seen the passion and hatred that these two fan bases have for each other. Granted I grew up in the south but I never liked either team. In fact it irritates me to even acknowledge that this is a great rivalry at all. Auburn could be 0-11 for 8 consecutive years, and Alabama could be 1-10 during that same stretch year after year, but the earth would still stand still on game day. Other rivalries fade when the teams are bad, not this one.

Interesting thought within that post....do Americans really consider Russia rivals any longer during Olympic competition? I don't think so. I would say Americans would prefer to see our atheletes defeat China, France, and Cuba.

There is a good discussion located within this thread, but not for this section of the site.

As for England.... Scotland not Ireland?

Florida vs Fla State, USC vs Notre Dame, Miami vs FSU, UCLA vs USC, Florida vs Georgia, Tennessee vs Alabama, Georgia vs Georgia Tech, Auburn vs Alabama.I must say I have a problem with all these duplicates. How can Alabama/Auburn be "the best" when some might consider Alabama/Tennesse to be equal or better? With Army/Navy and Michigan/Ohio State, there is no other choice.

Are you telling me Michagan vs Michagan State is not a rivalry? Most teams have multiple rivals, at least the good one do ;) I can tell you very, very few Tennessee fans would argue that Tennessee vs Alabama comes close to Auburn vs Alabama. I take it Ohio State has no qualms with anyone else in the Big 10?

Are you telling me Michagan vs Michagan State is not a rivalry? It's definitely a rivalry, but only one can be "The Best". What I'm saying is that if some Alabama fans think that the rivalry with Tenn is "The Best" (and I'm not saying that, just commenting because you threw it out there) then I think that takes away from their rivalry with Auburn being "The Best". If you ask any Michigan or OS fan which is "The Best", you'll get one unanimous answer.

Live in Ohio or Michigan. I can assure you, the hatred these two teams and the fans of such teams is just as deep or deeper than Alabama/Auburn. OSU can be 11-0 and Michigan can be 0-11 (would be a dream come true for me ;)) and I still want my Buckeyes to absolutely crush them each and every time. On the flip side, if Michigan would have beat Ohio State last year, and gone 4-8 instead of 3-9, their season would have been a success and RichRod would have been hailed as a hero.

See, it still boils down to which area of the country you live in as to which is the "best". Like Scar said ask any one of our fans and it's unanimous, OSU vs that team from up north (many people still won't say the school's name).

It's entirely too subjective to say which is the absolute best and get any kind of agreement.

You will also get a unnanimous answer from Auburn vs. Alabama fans. My college roomate was a Michigan native, who moved down for school. He swore that their was nothing bigger than big ten football until he lived here for a few months. He knew better then, it was hard for him to swallow but he finally realized just how epic it is down here. As someone who follows college football fairly close. Like to watch as many games as I can. My Question to everyone who thinks Alabama / Auburn is a "national" rivalry. Meaning it gets national attention. When was that game? I don't remember.

Being here in the isolated midwest my whole life Ohio St / Michigan is much more heated. Now the last 8 years hasn't been a "rivalry" because Michigan has to win to make it a rivalry.
Back in the 10 year war when Woody and Bo squared off something was at stake every year. The Rose Bowl!! Everyone knows who going to the Rose Bowl, because there were only a handful of Bowl games each year. When a game has that much riding on it it makes for a fiercer competition. Also, when was the last time a college coach wouldn't buy gas in the state of his rival? Woody did that when he couldn't get his car back to Ohio before it ran out of gas. His assistant who was with him got out and push the car back into Ohio.

As far as who else is Ohio St. rival. The rest of the Big 10. Nobody likes Ohio St. Best teams money can buy.

I don't like the Colts (no offense Indytraveler) but I also dislike the Ravens I am very passionate about my dislike for both. However if I had to choose I would say I dislike the Ravens more. This does not mean I am not passionate about disiking the Colts. When they play I tend to cheer for a natural disaster . Another example I would think Michigan vs Notre Dame would rank as one of the top 20. This does not mean however that Michigan vs Ohio State should not be placed in its proper slot at number three.;)

Alabama vs Tennessee is a great rivalry, the third Saturday of October is a right of passage in the south. It truly ranks as one of the greats. Just because a team has multiple rivalries does not mean that they both are not great. Georgia vs Florida is a great rivalry as is Florida vs FSU but neither would be top 5 IMO.

As for England vs America well to bad I cheer for England as one of Americas greatest freinds. This I think is a friendly rivalry, as opposed to perhaps America vs France or Alabama vs Auburn.

I think that Reservoir Dog is calling it soccer so that he doesn't confuse us Americans. ;) I call it football, but others might get it confused with American football. Right, Dog?

I was happy with the draw today! Saturday, June 12th, 2010! My calendars already marked!

I, of course, wouldn't consider England-USA a rivalry. Now England-Argentina? RIVALRY! USA-Mexico? RIVALRY!!!

Good luck, Dog!!!! :thumbsup::beer:

Yep i use the term "soccer" for intercot but otherwise its "football" for me back in the UK

A good draw for us but i would have loved to have been in the same group as France so we could beat the "Hand of Frog " Mr Henri as he is now known as in Europe .:D
I did laugh when Frances name got pulled out that you could hear some booing

USA and England should get through ...WELL England anway ;) :)

PS No Rivalry with UK and USA agree its friendly as said above ...
