I have heard of families being chosen to 'open' the MK. How does that work?
Is it just luck of the draw?
Any suggestions to make it more of a possibility?
TIA

It is definitely luck of the draw. However, if you're there early and happen to have some nice conversations with cast members, perhaps they're the ones selecting the family?!

We were selected as the First Family on our last trip to Magic Kingdom!:mickey: We arrived at MK about an hour before the park opened, although we were not the first guests in line. Our girls waited patiently in line at one of the gates playing rock, paper, scissors. They were wearing matching shirts that I don't think were Disney shirts. At the time, our kids were 6 and 4.

Our girls had a blast meeting the characters and opening the park!!

How we did it:

Got there early.

Were on the monorail/left side (less crowded).

Asked the CM how they pick the families.

No matching shirts, only one kid (at the time).

What EXACTLY does this involve. Do they do anything special? Or is it just that they are first in the park & get the meet the characters?
Does anyone remember what they did?

After we were selected, they took us inside the turnstill and off to the side. We received a certificate as the First Family and a free photo. They gave our girls autograph books and pens and explained the process of the First Family and opening the park. They have the process schedule down to the minute!

We were lead upstairs to the train station where we had a private meeting with several characters (Mickey, Mary Poppins and Bert, The Mad Hatter, Gipetto, Jimmine Cricket, Alice in Wonderland) Next we walk across the train tracks to the balcony overlooking the entrance. At the park opening we threw confetti in the air as the park opened.

Additonally, the girls received guest conductor passes for the train!!

They also had a photopass photographer who took quite a few shots with the characters and from the front at opening.
