Hi, we will arrive to Disney in the afternoon, we have dinner reservations at the Garden Grill in Epcot that evening. Will we need to redeem a park ticket in order to go to dinner? If so, would it be better for us to eat somewhere else that doesn't require a park ticket? If so, then where do you suggest? 4 adults and a 4 year old. thanks

To eat at Garden Grille you must use admission to enter Epcot.

If you are arriving and using a multi-day Magic Your Way admission of 4 or more days, the cost of adding your arrival day could be very minimal - a few dollars per person - and you could enjoy and evening at Epcot.

Otherwise, you could consider eating at one of the restaurants in any resort at WDW. That would not require a park admission. You didn't say where you're staying but if you're staying At WDW a restaurant at your resport could be your easiest night 1 with a 4 year old option.

Also, any restaurant at Downtown Disney would be a park admission-less option.

Yes, you will need to enter the park to eat at Garden Grill. If you don't want to use your tickets then, there are many great places at resorts or Downtown Disney. A few to consider:

Kouzzina at the Boardwalk.
Cape May Cafe at the Beach Club.
'Ohana at the Polynesian.
Boma or Sanaa at the Animal Kingdom Lodge.
Chef Mickey's at the Contemporary
T. Rex at Downtown Disney (fun for the little one).

Just a suggestion. I would go to Trails End at Fort Wilderness. It is an all you can eat buffet with similar food choices plus more options. There is plenty to do to pass the time. You could watch the Waterpagent and Wishes from the beach after dinner.

While Trail's end is Ok, I think Rainforest Cafe at AK (entrance also outside the park) is preferable if you want an experience and don't have one near you (we have one here in Maryland). Or, pick one of the resorts and go there!

It all depends on the length of your trip. So how many days do you currently have for park admission?

Because reservations are very hard to get (or change) anywhere at WDW anymore, I would suggest keeping the Garden Grill reservation and adding an extra day to your park tickets. Like Goes4FastPass said, the cost to add an additional day is, in MOST instances, only a few dollars per ticket.
