Oct. 15, 1997 – Previews began for Disney’s live stage show “The Lion King.” The Times Square Disney Store, connected to the New Amsterdam Theatre in N.Y.C. was filled with Lion King merchandise.
Oct. 15, 1997 - Innoventions West closed all its exhibits for a major rehab, Bill Nye, the Science Guy, Alec Tronic, IBM, SEGA, Silicon Graphics, Enel/Infobyte VR Presentation, and Aladdin’s VR Adventure, and AT&T.
Oct. 15, 1998 – WDW’S 26-minute show “Fantasmic” along with its 88 performers opened at Disney-MGM Studios.
Oct. 15, 1999 – The Disney film “The Straight Story” was released.
Oct. 15, 1999 – Singer-songwriter Terry Gilkyson, who wrote “The Bare Necessities” for Disney’s “The Jungle Book,” passed away in Tx. A name not well remembered today, his influence on pop music and folk music was significant. Gilkyson and the members of his group, the Easy Riders, made contributions as songwriters and performers with such hits as “Memories Are Made Of This,” and “Marianne.” He also wrote music for Disney’s “Swiss Family Robinson,” “The Aristocats,” “The Moon-Spinners,” “The Three Lives of Thomasina,” and the TV program “The Wonderful World of Disney.”
Oct. 15, 2001 – “I Went to Disney World!” a positive article (in the midst of terrorist activities and a weak economy) by syndicated columnist Liz Smith appeared in papers across the country.
Oct. 15, 2001 - Test Track’s Indoor Queue closed and was rehabbed to include both Standby and Fastpass lines.
Oct. 15, 2002 – Hilary Duff’s debut album “Santa Claus Lane” was released on Walt Disney Records.
Oct. 15, 2007 – It was announced that Disney.com’s Xtreme Digital, an interactive service that combined social networking, chat and video, has been nominated for two Technology & Engineering Emmys.
Oct. 15, 2007 – The “Teppan Edo” and “Tokyo Dining” Restaurants opened in the Japan Pavilion in World Showcase in Epcot at WDW.
