Sept. 8, 2000 – The Disney Channel Original Movie “The Other Me” debuted.
Sept. 8, 2001 – Singer Taylor Dayne gave her last performance in Disney’s Broadway musical “Aida.” She has played the role of Amneris since Feb. 2001. Idina Menzel would step into the role 5 days later.
Sept. 8, 2002 – WDW’S Caribbean Beach Resort closed for rehab. It was the 1st time WDW closed an entire hotel while the resort’s restaurant was updated.
Sept. 8, 2002 – As part of the One Hundred Mickey’s exhibit, the Disneyland Resort hosted the “Where’s Mickey?” pin event.
Sept. 8, 2003 – Disney’s “Teacher of the Year” was announced on TV’s “The Wayne Brady Show.” John Pussarini, a Phs. ED teacher from Wayland, Massachusetts was the lucky winner. He was selected from more than 185,000 nominees.
Sept. 8, 2004 – Disney Legend Frank Thomas, one of Walt’s Nine Old Men, passed away at the age of 92. His Disney credits included animating Thumper and Bambi on the ice in Bambi, Lady and Tramp eating a romantic spaghetti dinner in Lady and the Tramp, and Mad Madam Mim in the Sword and the Stone. A native Californian, Thomas played piano for the Disney Dixieland Jazz group, The Firehouse Five plus Two.
Sept. 8, 2005 – It was reported that an 11-year-old boy from Chicago (who battles Cerebal Palsy) has convinced his family to donate the $2500 they had saved up for a WDW vacation to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Sept. 8, 2006 – The 24th annual “Night of Joy,” featuring Christian music stars as: MercyMe, Casting Crowns, Kirk Franklin and Toby Mac, began in the Magic Kingdom at WDW. (2-day event)
Sept. 8, 2006 – The Disney Channel debuted the new animated series “The Replacements,” the 15th “Hannah Montana” episode, “More Than A Zombie To Me,” and the 50th episode of “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody,” – “Valley Dadi.”
Sept. 8, 2007 – The Emmy Awards were broadcast from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, Ca. Nick News with Linda Ellerbee” was awarded Outstanding Children’s Program beating out nominees “Hannah Montana,” “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody,” and “That’s So Raven.”
