I have always found the second stories of the buildings around the parks one of the most intriguing things. Maybe its silly, but the fact that I dont know whats up there has always stirred my curiosity. I'm sure its just storage or nothing. Does anyone know about anything interesting up there?

So today while I was in the magic kingdom, I embraced my curiousity and did a grand tour of second story-ish things in the park (it was a short tour, I went to Cindarella's Royal table and the colombia harbour house. But while I was at the latter, in the upstairs part that goes over the walkway between liberty square and fantasy land, there was an unlocked door that opened into a small unfurnished room that had another door in it that presumabley led into an offstage upstairs area. It was tempting not to sneek a peek, but I held out with dificulty. Altogether it was a pretty interesting day.

You would be surprised if you knew what was in the "upper floors" (actually the third floors since the tunnel is the first floor, the shops on Main St. are the second floor) of the buildings on Main St. They are all numbered areas but the numbers are only visible from backstage. No names just numbers.

If the "bypass" is open on Main St. after the 9pm parade or after Wishes (depends on the crowd size), you go "backstage" behind the Main St. buildings on the East side from the Plaza restaurant to Le Chapeau and can see the numbers from there.

Also, if "caught" in some specific areas of backstage, Security might relieve you of your park pass for the day along with a personal escort out the front gate. Some areas are very off limits even to regular CM's without the proper authorization for that area.

1) As well known, the 2nd stories are not tall.
2) The "forced perspective" makes them appear normal size.
3) Although they are actually quite reduced in height.
4) These are used for people referenced by Randy Newman.
5) You know, Short People.
6) They are off limits to normal height or tall people or CM's.
7) That is why many of us don't know what is in them.

 See, I always knew there were advantages to being short!

You are so funny Quixote. If an opportunity of that proportion offered itself to me - I would not have been able to resist. Stick to your adventurous side.

In World Showcase the Norway Pavillion has a private space on the 2nd floor. During the Intercot 10th Anniversary we has a private meet n greet with a certain famous mouse. Of course I don't like to drop names :mickey:

Behind those forced perspective facades is a very interesting world that is actually "full-normal size".

Actually, on the "2nd floor" of the buildings on Mainstreet, on the right hand side are training offices for new CMs. We had some Magic Kingdom orientation classes there. In the room where were training there was a door, and our trainer told us to open it. When we did, it looked like an attic, just exposed 2x4s and plywood and a small window with curtains. The CM told us we were above the candy shop and to be careful if we look out the window as Guests would see us, and we would look 10 ft tall due to the forced perspective. It was very cool though to look out the window and see guests walking around. Also there were wires running all around in the little room and a few lights for at night.

So that's why my daughter has nightmares about the giants who live above Mainstreet.

If you take the Keys to The Kingdom tour, you'll get to see what's going on up on the second floor of Main Street. Toward the end of the tour you will be taken up to the WDW offices on the right hand side of Main Street (facing the Castle) and you'll learn some interesting "background". I won't say anything further, cause it's a "spoiler".

Here's an odd question... If there is a "real" second story up there, why would they need forced perspective?

Well, at least partially, it has to do with how they want everything to look in relation to the castle. You don't want towering stores in front of a suddenly stubby looking castle.

We took the KTK tour in April but did not get to go upstairs on Main ST. Wish we would have. That would have been neat.

I won't go so far as to say that tours did or did not go up to the "2nd flr." on the East side of Main St. but, knowing what operations are on the floor from Confectionery to Ice Cream, it would surprise me that Security and Operations would allow it. I know how hard it is for a regular CM to get into those areas. Some of the merchandise areas of the first floor maybe but the 2nd flr is a fairly secure area.

Also, I see the tours 4 or 5 days a week and they have always been backstage on the West side and then go back into the tunnel at the rear of the Emporium and then tour the tunnel block area around Main St. and have never seen the tour go to the "2nd flr." of the West side. Would be too hard to navigate a large tour group thru those "2nd flr." areas anyway.

Just my $.02
