View Full Version : Mission Space & the delayed UGH factor...

We haven't been to Epcot in quite a few years...since they first opened Mission Space!

I remember that it was awesome but feeling woozy about 1/2 an hour after riding it.

Is this still the case? Do you think it affects adults worse than kids?

For me, it definitely wasn't delayed - I felt awful during the ride! Luckily the feeling didn't last after I got off the ride. The effect for me was as if a huge weight was on my chest. I couldn't breathe and I felt like I was going to pass out. No nausea, thank goodness.

I think it was a combination of not having eaten any breakfast, being dehydrated and not paying attention to the instructions before the ride (i.e. not keeping my head facing forward).

I know that I was able to tolerate spinning rides much better when I was younger than I am now.

I so wanted to love Mission: Space! My dad worked for NASA during the space program in the 60s and 70s and I had wanted to be an astronaut when I was young. I was so disappointed when I had the bad reaction.

I still go on the ride but do the mild side now! That way I can experience it without the nasty side effects.

My recommendation to anyone who is riding the first time and doesn't know how you'll react: Be sure your hydrated. Listen carefully to the instructions before the ride. They're not just for dramatic effect! It's all about your equilibrium. And breathe deeply!

If you haven't been in a few years you may not be aware that there is now a "green" version that does not spin. Same ride, just no spinning. If the "orange" side made you feel bad try the "green" side.

Same as my similar avatar experienced above. We went on it just months after it opened and didn't have the green option they do now. I had this feeling before going on the ride to "opt out" when they asked right before getting into the simulator. I should have listened to my instincts. I felt a little woozy on the ride, but not bad. But upon exiting, I felt so fuzzy and tired - almost like after you leave a movie theatre after watching a 3 hour movie - except 10 times worse. I felt like I could curl up on the bench outside and sleep for hours. After an hour, I was no better. We stopped by the medical facility and nurse told me (w/o me having to register and be officially seen) that my symptoms were classic motion sickness. This was odd as I am very motion sick in the car and ALWAYS have nausea. No nausea this time, but it took almost 3-4 hours before I began to feel like myself again.

Since then, we've only ridden it going green - and that's not the environmental lingo, the green, more tame ride (no g-force). The effects are still good w/o the aftermath!

yeah...the one time I got sick was after riding the second time on one night (when I took my eyes off the screen and watched my sons reactions)...I was fine on the ride and in the exit queue area...but about ten to fifteen minutes later I started noticing a queasy feeling that pretty much lasted the rest of the evening. Once is my MS limit.

You must look directly ahead and not close your eyes. I have never had a problem, but we were there in June and some people had to be escorted off the ride to a waiting garbage can. I felt really bad for those people because I don't think they knew what they were getting into. (older couples) My husband also felt a little queasy but he had the tonga toast for breakfast. Looking back, that was probably not what astronauts had before they were launched.:ack:

I really didn't have any symptoms after the ride. I felt a tad light-headed, as if I had just spun around in a circle really fast. But it only lasted about 10-15 mins. Once I started walking, I was back to normal. But I've never really had major problems with any motion sickness at all.

I definately think the temperature outside has alot to do how you feel after this ride. I rode in the summer and felt lightheaded after getting off. I rode it in the winter when it was much cooler out and felt nothing. So I think the dehydration theory has some weight,

Unfortunately, I think this is a know-after-you-go kind of question.

My son and I rode MS when he was 6 and it was brand new (there was no "wuss" option!)

We **LOVED** it and rode it again immediately after - not knowing (or seeing the sign that explained) that doing so is a "no-no"!

We still didn't feel bad - and walked away feeling GREAT about how much fun it was.

My mother, on the other hand, rode once and felt bad for hours afterwards.

I should add that I'm NOT a brave person when it comes to thrill rides - RoRC and EE are about my LIMIT for thrills (I've ridden ToT twice; the first time I liked it, but it wasn't too bad - the second time it was EXTREME and I felt like I was going to need a tank of oxygen to get me breathing normally again afterwards!!)

I think some people just like MS and some don't; if you're afraid it'll make you feel bad, go GREEN. It's still fun, and you won't get sick. (But team orange is still my TEAM!)

It is amazing how different people have different reactions to the same thing. I LOVE:number1: mission space and ride it several times a visit with no issues. The last time I was on the ride, there was no one next to me so I did my job and theirs. Looking away from my screen to theirs did not cause a problem. We have a large family and no one has ever had a problem and we go almost every year.:mickey:

Haha...I'm guessing NOT. That was not a good breakfast choice for Mission Space. But, definitely a great breakfast choice for all other days! :-)

Gave me a headache, gave DH a tummy ache. We're skipping it this trip!

When I went down the first time after it opened My DW and SIL and myself had a go on it. I felt great. On the other hand DW and SIl didn't fair so well. They had a date with the porcelain  god. lol. While they were there I went on two more times. I guess being able to handle the G's is the answer. I was honored one time to fly with the United States Thunderbirds  a few years back. I hit 8G's with no problem. Of course I had the G suit on and had to grunt like a pig doing the hair pin turns. So you can see why MS didn't bother me.

I really enjoyed the ride, very intense. I've stuck with the green version the last few times to stay with DW and DD.

I'm an adult. I get dizzy and feel nauseated on the teacups. I was really nervous about M:S and feared having a reaction. But I rode it, loved it, and nothing happened! I felt great, no problems at all. My husband had a few issues at the time of ride and about half hour afterwards, but was then fine. This was before they had the tamer option. I'm glad, because I would have opted for the tamer side and missed out on what I really love about this ride.

I have never ever had a problem with MS. It's one of my favorite rides at WDW, in fact, last time I rode it, my brother and I look at each other and said.... is that it? Him and I can go on any ride of the thrill sort and not feel any excitement from it or nervousness. The last ride that really made me go... wow! Was the big turns on expedition everest.

Like above posters have noted, I don't think you really know how you're gonna react to the ride until you try it, if it's your first time, GO GREEN, if that makes ya naseaus stay green. My brother and I on the other hand will always end up Orange!

For me, if a ride were to make me feel that way it would be during and right after, not half an hour later. Depending on when you went, could have been the heat maybe ? :ack:

I have not been on MS since it first opened and don't plan on going on it again.

I had the worst headache the rest of the day after riding. It was one of those sick-feeling headaches. I won't even ride it on the green side. I'd rather just go on something else or walk around the park. I do not like that ride what so ever. My entire family usually always skips this one every trip.

Never had any problems with MS: even after riding it two or three times in a row.

(Well, felt a little odd after having ridden it after having three beers )

Normally, like swimming, we wait an hour after eating, and like Gary Sinese tells us, we do keep our heads straight ahead and our eyes open.

Love that ride! "Orange, please!"

When we last went there wasn't a green version of the ride, just the original orange. We had no problems on it and when we go again I'd imagine we'll be heading for the orange version again. :mickey:

Hey..the barf bags are there for a reason! :ack: Fortunately for you (and me), there is now a milder version that I enjoyed just as much as the original version. Go ahead hard-core MS riders...call me a :scared:...I prefer enjoying the rest of my day, as opposed to feeling somewhat nauseated for several hours afterwards! (I simply can't do the spinning thing).
