View Full Version : New Found Ride Nausea - Am I alone?

Hi,

This is going to probably sound totally weird but I have to ask because you guys are the best.

I have always been someone who could do thrill ride after thrill ride without incident. The only rides I couldn't do were the spinning ones because I would get nauseous and feel sick. But all other rides were totally cool. ToT, RnR, TT, SM, you name it, I did them, and many times over and over, line permitting.

All of a sudden, over my last 3 trips I have been getting nauseous on every ride, including all of the ones mentioned above. It started at AK on Dinosaur one time and has carried over to any ride with any motion at all. The simulator rides would also get me in the past but never the ones mentioned above.

Has anyone else experienced something like this? I hit 40 last year and I'm wondering if that has something to do with it or if it is something else entirely.

It would really bum me out if from here on out I have to weigh feeling nauseous versus riding my favorite rides. I love all things WDW and have said many times on these boards that the resort is as important to me as the rides are but the rides are such an important part of the experience for me that if I had to slow down or stop them altogether I would be pretty bummed out.

Just wonder if I'm alone on this one. I hope not.

Jay

Me too. Can't ride the Carousel anymore, makes me sick to my stomach.

I rode the tea cups with my kids last summer and had to fix my eyes on one thing, or it would have been bad...very bad....

Time changes all - especially our equilibrium!:mickey:

You may want to check with your doctor about possible a ear infection or something else that may be affecting your equilibrium.

Of course, you could pack Dramamine, or the equivalent patches, to alleviate the symptoms.

I feel your pain... Dramamine low drowsy formula works wonders for me!!

Does Dramamine work? For some reason I thought it didn't help that much?

I've never been able to go on jerky simulation (Star Tours) or spinning (Dumbo) rides. I shudder to think what would happen if I attempted the Teacups. :ack:  :ack:

Maybe you could try a bit of Dramamine or something of the sort. If you think it would put you out (if the product "may" cause drowsiness I'm out like a light!), maybe half a dose would be enough to keep your stomach under control but leave you alert to enjoy your day.

40 is closing in on me fast (later this year) so I sure do hope that I don't get any worse with motion sickness!

It happened to me once at Six Flags on a day of coaster hoping, I go sick after each ride. :ack: Went to the Doctors afterward since that was so not like me, I had a double ear infection due to my short eustacian tubes, my already compromised equillibrium was totally shot. After meds to clear it up, I was back to my normal "only slightly off-balanced self". Maybe you should check with an Ears, Nose, Throat Specialist - In my case the Dr. really helped.

Ginger is suppose to help with nausea. I've never tried it. I saw it on a show on Food Network. They tested it on rides. I can't remember the results! Sorry.

Jay, the exact same thing happened to me... I'm 41, and somewhere between loving every crazy rollercoater ride in my 20's and hitting my late 30's and early 40's, something shifted, and I'm just not okay on them anymore.

I was never a "spinning ride" person, either, so I haven't gone on them in years & years - didn't even care for them as a late teen.

But rollercoaster and simulator rides never bothered me -- ever! That being said, my first time on RnRc, I was SO nauseaus when I got off... SM did a bit of a number on me all of a sudden (but I was fine later rides), Star Tours got to me so much so I had to close my eyes through most of it, and even EE got to me a bit!!

I guess I just chalked it up to things "shifting" in the equilibrium area as I got older... but then, when I went back to Disney w/ some g'friends 5 weeks after our family Christmas trip, I went back on everything except RnRc, and I was fine -- completely, totally fine!!

So, when I got home, I told my DH I just need to go to Disney more often, and I'll be fine... ;)

The same thing happened to my husband. He was always okay with anything until he hit his mid-thirties. Now, he has to pass on many of the rides he enjoyed in the past.

I guess I'll join the "old folks club" too......I was fine until last week....We took our kids to Idlewild (a local amusement park here in PA) and they got a new teacups ride.....my sons and I rode it and when I got off I felt off, not really ill, just off -- the same feeling I got after riding Mission Space -- the wild version. I started to think last week that it must be b/c I'm getting older, which I've always made fun of DH when he tells DS#1 that mom has to ride b/c daddy gets sick!

I guess I'm going to have to deal with getting older and my head being a little off, which will be hard b/c I have a 7 year old and a 1 year old!

The same thing happened to my husband when he hit his late thirties. I thought he was making it up until the same thing happened to me when I hit mine! I was very sad thinking about not being able to enjoy the rides like I used to. Never thought about taking Dramamine...what a great idea!

Yep, it happens. I never was a wild ride lover, but I'm even less now. Of course, the doctor's visit couldn't hurt...

Wow... I thought it was just me. Things I did when younger now make me  Dramamine helps me, but even the low drowsy formula makes me REALLY REALLY sleepy a few hours later.

Yup... hate to tell you but the aging process does affect the inner ear, which causes the motion sickness feelings or symptoms ...

although one time, I did have much worse symptoms than usual (ie. rode a really tame litte wooden coaster and felt sick afterwards), and did find out a few days later that I had a sinus infection. ....

but if you say that it's been about the last 3 visits ... sure sounds like the affects of the normal aging process ... now you know why the "old folks" aren't on the tea cups, carousel, or Expedition Everest ... it's not the fear of the ride, it's the fear of getting sick !

I'm probably older than most who have commented on your question. I can ride anything at the WORLD and have and still do. There is one ride that I rode once and will not ride again. The dreaded and hair raising "TEACUPS". It took me quite a while to get over it that day. Not sure why and don't care to find out. :coaster:

I've had motiion sickness for as long as I can remember, and have never enjoyed the spinny or roller coaster type rides:sick:. Flying isn't fun either, however, I have discovered ginger as well! I don't know if you have Gravol down in the States (it's like Drammamine) but they have ones that are ginger, and the last 2 times I flew, no problems:thumbsup:! and no drowsiness either, I'm like another poster, Tylenol and the like make me sleepy:sleepin:! Might be worth a try.

I can't do Dramamine makes me feel out of it all day even the non drowsy kind. But you can get a patch to go behind your ear if you are looking for other options.

Yeah, it happened to me, in my thirties I think, but just with the spinning rides so far. I used to love them, now I can't ride them. No nausea on coasters yet, but I haven't been on one in a few years to check.

I'm 37 now and it hit me in my early 30's. I start taking ginger pills about a week before our trip and I also started taking the generic over the counter antihistamines (like Claritin). This worked great for me as long as I took it easy. I couldn't ride extreme rides over and over. We did ride SM three times in a row and it started messing with my head. Star Tours and Mission Space (light) also gave me a little motion sickness.

I never liked spinning rides. But now that I'm older (44 today) alot of things give me motion sickness. I think I will try the ginger pills this next trip also.

DH has the same problem, he takes Meclizine. It has less of a drowsy effect. I think the brand name is Bonine.

Another thing I just remembered that helped was chewing gum. I realized it when we were riding Soarin. Maybe it's just me or mental but I remember it helped so I'd ask my wife for some gum when we were standing in line.

As we age our inner ear hardens. For many people this causes more severe reactions to the motion of rides, boats etc.

"Part of the rich pageantry of nature" as I heard Detective Fish say once many moons ago on the old Barney Miler show. I have an extremely intelligent scientist-friend who swears she is not pulling my leg when she tells me that the brain shrinks slightly with age and that also affects the way we react to thrill rides. Sloshes around a little more?
Not sure about that explanation but I know neither my DH or I can do roller coasters the way we used to.

I might be opening myself up for ridicule and embarrassment but here it goes...
I've never had a problem with the thrill rides at all, but..The Seas with Nemo & Friends makes me sick as a dog!!! The first time I rode it and became ill I thought it was the heat or one too many Magaritta's. I tried it on my next visit and the same thing! Seriously, how can riding in a clam at 2 mph make me so sick when I can eat a full meal in Mexico and then ride M:S with no problem??? Maybe it has something to do with moving sideways. All I know is I'll never ride it again!!

Likewise, just started happening to me recently, in my early 30s. After three straight on ToT on our most recdent trip I just had to stop. Never would have bothered me before.

Scopolamine patches work pretty well for me, and I'd recommend them.

I guess getting nauseated just comes with the age!

(An aside on "nauseous" and "nauseated"...I'll let Strunk and White do the talking: "The first means `sickening to contemplate'; the second means `sick at the stomach.' Do not, therefore, say `I feel nauseous,' unless you are sure you have that effect on others.") ;)

This "bug" hit me just last year. I could ride anything but one day it happened. EE did it for me, then it happened on almost every ride I went on. The one that is the worst is Toy Story Mania. :ill:

I am not a roller coaster rider and never have been. I get car sick and air sick also but take Dramamine for that. I have always been the one babysitting while others went on the rides. But last year when DH and I went alone, I decided to start taking Dramamine every morning before going to the parks so I could at least try to ride the rides with DH. It worked pretty good. I didn't get sleepy either although sometimes that happens to me. I take the non-drowsy formula now. I'm hoping it will work this time with EE because DH really wants to ride it. I don't ride anything that jerks me though because of my back. I have heard a lot recently about ginger. Where do you get ginger pills or candies and how long do they last? Do you have to take them before each ride or just once a day? I also take Claritin but didn't think about making sure I take if before going to the parks, that it would help with this. I'll remember that this time.

DD has never gotten sick on rides, cars, airplanes or anything. Then one year when she was about 19 she suddenly got air sick during a rough landing. Since then she has had to contend with car sickness, etc. I thought it was really strange that she would change so much like that. I do know your equilibrum gets off the older you get but didn't think about that having something to do with it.

I have gotten the same way. I just hit 40 and was always able to ride everything up until a couple years ago. Motion sims are a no no for me, but Soarin is the exception.
I can still do the coasters, but spinning rides are on the no list too.
Usually it has to do with the ways your ears develop as you age.
Oh to be a kid again, physically. Still a kid mentally.

I was OK on BTMRR and EE in December, so I'm still OK as of now. But for my next trip I'll be sure to pack some patches and Sea bands.

Yes, the brand name is Bonine & it works great for motion sickness!

I always have had trouble with motion sickness & now both of my ds's do also! I asked our pharmacist about Bonine & he said it was better than Dramamine, way less drowsy & it's less expensive! He said that products actually been out for quite a while, I can't remember the details, whether it was previously only by prescription or ? My ds's can take Bonine once a day & ride in the car for 8 - 9 hours & still be fine! It doesn't seem to make them drowsy at all like Dramamine. Dramamine does make the "less drowsy" product, but it's not reccommended for younger kids!

I too noticed during our trip last year, I was 44 at the time , that I felt queasy after even some of the rides that had never bothered me, but I was also just getting over a terrible sinus infection so that may have been it. But now who knows? Maybe it's just age! So I think during our next trip, I'll pack some Bonine in my pack during the day - just in case! ;)

This haopened to me in 2006 (age 42). I had ridden Hulk with my son four times in a row. This was the first time in my life I had ever experienced motion sickness. :sick:It took several hours to recover. I thought this was just due to having the front of the line perk and having no wait in between. Now, I am thinking something else.

When I read this thread I began to think. When we had transfered over to the Wilderness Lodge for the second leg of our trip we had gone to Epcot one day. On Soaring I also experienced motion sickness but to a lesser degree. This had never happened before either.

I hope I don't experience this in our up coming August trip. Dang, aging. :confused:Just got progressive lenses eight months ago too.

Oh well, I just have to hope for the best. :mickey:

Sometimes the problem is with your eyes not your ears. I rode RNR for the first time without my glasses on to protect them. I came off that ride a bit green. The next time I rode it, I left my glasses on and no problems at all. Have your eyes checked and see if that could be the problem.

Ginger does work. I've used it several times. I would try a natural type of motion sickness pill or the non-drowsy Dramamine pill if needing some help at WDW or any type of theme park.

I'll be 40 in a few months and I can tell that things have changed a bit when it comes to riding coasters! Keep your chin up!

Unfortunately the patch which is called Transderm Scop also has the side effect of drowsiness. You could go the natural way and try sea-bands. I just turned 38 and I'm going to wdw in Sept. hope my equal librium will be still o.k.

ginger tablets def. could work for you on this one. If they dont work, its probably the equilibrium which i dont think there is anything you can do about that. my husband has the same problem. its only the simulators though that bother him.

No...you are NOT alone! I, too, have noticed a newfound aversion to some attractions as I get older. :ack: Mostly the spinning or dropping ones. Such as TOT, Teacups, and Mission Space (the wild side). But, I could ride the RRC a hundred times in a row, and it not bother me. How weird is that? But, unfortunately, that's the way it goes! And fortunately, there are PLENTY of other attractions for me to enjoy!

I noticed it last year when I went on the Teacups with my boys. They beg me to go on it with them, because I can really get that thing spinning. Halfway throught the ride, I started to get dizzy and nauseous, and had to stop spinning the car. I just attributed it to having just eaten lunch. But then It happened the next day on RnR. I just turned 37, so maybe that might be it for me without dramamine.

Oh Well!

One thing to keep in mind is that anxiety about possibly getting motion sick, and/or focusing on how your feeling instead of on the scenery can also trigger motion sickness. That certainly doesn't explain it entirely or why it happened in the first place, but it can cause it to happen again, or make it worse than it would have been. If my DDs are in the car, I have to be careful that I'm not over-focusing on the motion of the car with the worry that they'll get sick (they're prone to that) or I start to feel sick too!

This whole thread is very interesting to me. I thought I was the only one who got motion sick on rides. :) (Yes, I'm way over 40 but have had motion sickness all my life.) Last trip was the first time I tried taking Dramamine in order to ride some of the rides. I never realized there were so many others that it affects too. Thanks! Good ammunition for my DH when he says for the 1000th time that it is all in my head. :) I think he even got a little green on MS last time.

I too get "ill" on the Teacups. Until last year, I was not able to do RRC. Suffering from claustrophia, most rides of this type were out of the question. Last year DD14 took me on RRC, and I concentrated on what was going on around me (music, etc), rather than the ride itself. That made a huge difference, and we did RRC 5 times in one day!! But I will never do the dreaded Teacups again. Go figure!
