Jan. 4, 1998 – The Downtown Disney Pleasure Island country/western club “Neon Armadillo” closed its doors. (It would be replaced with the BET Soundstage Club.)
Jan. 4, 1998 – Disney’s “Principal Takes a Holiday” aired on The Wonderful World of Disney.
Jan. 4, 1998 – Both Bob Hope and the late Roy O. Disney (Walt’s brother) were among the Los Angeles citizens honored during an Investiture ceremony for the Papal Order of St. Gregory the Great. The honorees were cited for their contributions to the Catholic Church, the Christian Faith and their service and charity work.
Jan. 4, 2002 – The Orlando Sentinel reported that the U.S. army is planning to double the size of Shades of Green, its 287-room hotel at WDW, in a $50 million expansion project that could start as soon as April 2002.
Jan. 4, 2003 – WDW’s Polynesian Revue (a tropical-themed dinner show performed at the Polynesian Resort) gave its last performance. It would be replaced in Feb. 2003 with the “Spirit of Aloha Dinner Show.”
Jan. 4, 2004 – The Toronto production of Disney’s “The Lion King” was staged for the last time. The live show closed after more than 1,500 performances over nearly 4 years at the Princess of Wales Theatre.
Jan. 4, 2005 – The largest Disney theme park ticket give-away took place at the Fed Ex Orange Bowl National Championship game in Miami, Fl. Seventy-two thousand ticket holders shouted “I’m going to Disneyland!” after each of them received a surprise free ticket to any Disney theme park in the world. Mickey Mouse made a surprise appearance at the end of the third quarter and personally invited each of them to the global celebration saluting the 50th Anniversary of Disneyland Park in Ca. (The Southern California Trojans won over the Oklahoma Sooners by a score of 55-19.)
Jan. 4, 2005 – The “Wonders of Life” Pavilion closed in Future World in Epcot at WDW. (It would be used for a seasonal attraction)
Jan. 4, 2007 – “Kendi,” an 8-year old White Rhino, gave birth to her second baby – a male named Tom, at Disney’s Animal Kingdom at WDW. The healthy baby White Rhino was the 6th born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. His mother, Kendi, was the first.
Jan. 4, 2007 – The World of Disney Store at DTD Marketplace celebrated when it reached $1 billion in sales since its opening on Oct. 2, 1996.
