Dec. 27, 1904 – The play “Peter Pan,” by James Barrie, opened at the Duke of York’s Theater in London. (Years later it would be made into a Disney classic.
Dec. 27, 1914 – Disney animator & cartoonist John “Jack” Morin Bradbury was born in Seattle, Wa. He would join Disney in 1936 as an inbetweener on several cartoons and later work on larger projects, such as “Pinocchio,” “Fantasia,” and “Bambi.” In 1947 he would join Western Publishing where he would draw Disney comics.
Dec. 27, 1926 – The Alice Comedy “Alice the Lumberjack” was released.
Dec. 27, 1930 – Disney’s Silly Symphony cartoon “Playful Pen” was released.
Dec. 27, 1936 – H.S. Teague, 28, a cartoonist at Walt Disney Studios was killed in a plane crash. The plane was flying in rain and poor visibility south of Newhall, Ca. The United Air Lines twin-engine Boeing airliner struck a ridge in the Santa Susana Mountains, snapping off its wings. The fuselage continued on, soaring over a ravine before striking the rock wall of a bluff below Oak Mountain and falling over 100 feet into the bottom of Rice Canyon. All 12 persons were killed. (9 passengers and 3 crew members.)
Dec. 27, 1937 – Walt Disney appeared on the cover of TIME. The publication profiled Disney the week “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” was released, calling the film, “the most ambitious animated cartoon ever attempted.”
Dec. 27, 1939 – Actor John Amos, who appears in the 1973 live-action Disney feature “The World’s Greatest Athlete,” was born in Newark, N.J. (TV fans will recognize him as James Evans from the hit 1970s series Good Times.)
Dec. 27, 1940 – Disney’s Pluto cartoon “Pantry Pirate” was released.
Dec. 27, 1954 – Walt Disney appeared on the cover of TIME magazine (for the 2nd time). The issue featured an article titled “Father Goose.”
Dec. 27, 1955 – The Mickey Mouse Club aired the episode “Today is Guest Star Day” on ABC-TV.
