Dec. 24, 1871 – Giussepe Verdi’s opera “Aida” premiered at the Opera House in Cairo.
Dec. 24, 1925 – Alan Alexander Milne’s “In Which We Are Introduced to Winnie-the- Pooh and Some Bees, and the Stories Begin” was published in the London Evening News.
Dec. 24, 1937 – Disney’s Mickey Mouse cartoon “Lonesome Ghosts” was released.
Dec. 24, 1939 – A new campus for the Walt Disney Studio in Burbank, Ca. opened for business. (The success of “Snow White” has allowed Disney to build it.
Dec. 24, 1942 – The cover of this day’s issue of HAB “IT” (an official newsletter for men stationed at the U.S. Naval Reserve Aviation Base in Hutchinson, Ks.) featured a Disney-designed insignia. (This issue marks the first appearance of the station’s new emblem – Jiminy Cricket in an airplane with an anchor trailing behind it.
Dec. 24, 1944 – Musician, record company executive, race car owner, and politician Mike Curb was born in Savannah, Ga. In 1969, his group the Mike Curb Congregation would score a Top 10 hit on the Adult Contemporary Charts with a version of “It’s a Small World.” The song would be chosen by Disneyland as the ride’s official theme song and the group would be considered the official Disneyland and WDW singers.
Dec. 24, 1948 – Disney’s Donald Duck cartoon “Tea for Two Hundred” was released.
Dec. 24, 1949 – Walt Disney’s Lilly Belle Steam Engine was tested at his studio. The engine is part of his railroad layout in the garden of his new home in Holmby Hills.
Dec. 24, 1951 – Lux Radio Theater with the cooperation of Walt Disney Productions presented an adaptation of “Alice in “Wonderland” with Kathryn Beaumont, Jerry Colona and Ed Wynn.
Dec. 24, 1954 – The Disney People and Places Featurette “Siam” was released.
