Dec. 21, 1910 – Art director, Imagineer and Disney Legend Marvin Davis was born in Clovis, N.M. In 1962, he would receive an Emmy Award for art director and scenic design on “Walt’s Wonderful World of Color.”
Dec. 21, 1913 – Imagineer and Disney Legend Fred Joeger was born in Pekin, Il. He will help realize Walt Disney’s visions by crafting three-dimensional miniature models of Disney theme park attractions, as well as motion picture sets and props (before they are brought to full scale.)
Dec. 21, 1914 – Eustace Lycett, designer of special effects for Disney movies, was born in Straffordshire, England. His 43-year career with Disney would begin in 1937 as a protégé of Ub Iwerks (a pioneer of animation and special effects). Lycett would work on more than 30 films, including “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” “Babes in Toyland,” and “Mary Poppins.”
Dec. 21, 1922 – Paul Winchell, ventriloquist and the voice of many animated characters including Disney’s Tigger, was born in N.Y.C.
Dec. 21, 1936 – A baby named Sharon Mae was born. Less than two weeks later she would be adopted by Walt Disney and his wife Lillian.
Dec. 21, 1937 – Disney’s first feature length animated film, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” premiered at the Carthway Circle Theater in Hollywood, Ca. The film featured the voices of Adrianna Caselotti (Snow White) and Harry Stockwell (Prince). In attendance for the opening were such stars as Douglas Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin, Marlene Dietrich, Judy Garland, John Barrymore, and Carole Lombard.
Dec. 21, 1944 – Disney’s 7th animated feature “The Three Caballeros” had its world premiere in Mexico. (U.S. release was Feb. 3, 1945)
Dec. 21, 1945 – Disney’s Donald Duck cartoon “Old Sequoia” was released.
Dec. 21, 1948 – Disney’s first true-life nature documentary featurette “Seal Island” opened at the Crown Theatre in Pasadena, Ca. It would play in front of MGM’s “The Three Musketeers.” (General release was May 4, 1949)
Dec. 21, 1948 – Actor Samuel L. Jackson, the voice of Lucius Best/Frozone in the 2004 Disney-Pixar animated feature “The Incredibles,” was born in Washington, D.C.
