Nov. 30, 1835 – Mark twain, was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens in Florida, Missouri. (Twain was raised in Hannibal, Missouri.) Walt Disney had a great affinity for Twain’s writing. “Tom Sawyer Island” is the only Disneyland attraction that Walt personally designed.
Nov. 30, 1918 – Red Cross volunteer Walt Disney, aboard the S.S. Vaubin (a converted cattle boat) arrived in Cherbourg, France. Although an armisitice has been signed ending the World War, the volunteers are in France to aid in the occupation. The harbor in Cherbourg was clogged by a sunken boat, so the Vaubin steamed to Le Havre (a city in Normandy on the English Channel). Walt and the others disembarked in Le Havre and were put on a train for Paris.
Nov. 30, 1927 – Actor Robert Guillaume, the voice of Rafiki in “The Lion Ling” animated films. Was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He also appeared in the 1994 TV specials “The Making of The Lion King” and “Disney’s Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra.” (TV fans will know him from such series as Soap, Benson, and Sports Night.)
Nov. 30, 1931 – The Mickey Mouse short “Mickey Cuts Up” was released.
Nov. 30, 1935 – Disney’s Silly Symphony cartoon “Cock o’ the Walk” was released.
Nov. 30, 1955 – The Disneyland TV series aired “The Story of the Animated Drawing,” hosted by Walt Disney himself.
Nov. 30, 1955 – The Mickey Mouse Club aired the episode “ Today is Anything Can Happen Day” on ABC-TV.
Nov. 30, 1966 – Walt Disney (weeks after undergoing surgery) collapsed at his California home. He was revived by medics and readmitted to St. Joseph Hospital.
Nov. 30, 1978 – Nita Booth, a member of the Disney Channel’s “The All New Mickey Mouse Club,” was born in Va.
Nov. 30, 1979 – Disney Legend Dick Huemer passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Burbank, Ca. A veteran animator and comic strip artist, his Disney credits include “Fantasia,” “Dumbo,” and “Alice in Wonderland.”
