For Christmas, I wanted to make a set of photo ornaments. I was looking online and at 11 dollars an ornament, it's going to get too expensive so I thought I might try making my own!

I know Michael''s craft store usually has wood ornaments for kids (or adults) to paint/color/etc... I was thinking I might try to adhere the photos to these. I could trace the outline of the ornament on the photo - cut it out - and then glue it on. My question is... what's the best way to do this? I was thinking maybe a paper-mache type glue to basically paint on over the picture? I'm not sure what the best way would be...

Hi! I am not sure about going over the photo with glue (unless it is a paper copy and not on a real photo paper), just glue under it i think. But maybe you can have fun decorate over it. There are some paint in a sort of pen that get all fluffy when it dry. Love what it does in a scrapbooking page!

And there are some very cute little boxes with a clear place so you can see what is inside and you can put your picture in it.

If you were to go with the wood, I think you might use decoupage glue. I know this is safe for photos. It paints on white and dries clear. You use a light coat to join the pieces together, let it dry, and then put another coat on top.

The other day Michaels had foam ornament kits to put photos in. I believe there were six in a pack and they were onsale for $4.95. The ones I saw were penguins, snowmen, and christmas trees.

I do know that if you decide to glue a photo onto it you have to spray a photosafe, photoprotector spray and let it dry for about 48 hours...I forget the name of it but you can purchase it at any arts & crafts store, Michaels, Joanns, etc...it actually says Photoprotector right on it. Because if you dont just the air alone in time will damage, fade and destroy the picture. If you spray that on it it will withstand the test of time...and in the scrapbooking section there are many many different types of "glues" not like elmers lol, but made specifically to not damage picture and to adhere to such objects of wood, glass, plastic, etc...if you use just some plain old glue, it wont work, and destroy the picture. My mom would know exactly what to use, she was very artsy-crafty and the name of the particular glue she used has escaped me. But I would definitely go research the different types of glues before buying it and make sure its photosafe, acid-free, and can adhere a picture to wood.

Do you have a Hobby Lobby near you? They had a bunch of make-your-own ornament kits, and I believe that they had ones that you can insert photos into.

Just use Modge Podge over them and they will be fine. You can get it at Michael's or Hobby Lobby. I think Walmart might even have it.
